Drinking when you didn't know you were pregnant

Hi guys

Just after some advice. I took a test today (well 3 in the end) and they've come back positive!

I wasn't really expecting it as my cycles had been all over the place and super long. My last one was 3 months long and my last period was 27th June. I had contacted a fertility unit as I thought there was a problem due to my lack of periods and all tests prior to this were negative.

I last took a test on the 4th of October which was negative. Since then there have been two occasions where I've been out and enjoyed myself and a lot of alcohol was involved. The last time was 2 weeks ago.

I just did a clear blue week test and it says I'm 3 weeks +. I'm terrified I've done something to hurt the baby (if it's still a viable pregnancy etc).

If my test on the 4th was negative, does anyone know how long that could make me?

Did anyone else drink a lot before they knew? Obviously I won't touch anything from now on.

Thank you ☺️

I drank before I knew with both of my pregnancies, I found out fairly early on. Both boys are completely fine!

Bad stuff is transmitted via the umbilical cord.. There isn't one yet op. You are fine and so is dc. Congratulations..

I did this. We were TTC but I thought there was no way I could be pregnant because DH was away during what I thought was my fertile window. We went on holiday and I drank a LOT as I thought it might be my last child free holiday Blush DS is absolutely fine, a bright healthy teenager now.

Thank you guys so much for your quick responses, so much appreciated ☺️

I went to a friend's hen do and drank loads. Was really drink. Played drinking games. Didn't realise I was pregnant. That was nearly 21 years ago and son turned out absolutely fine. x

Happens all the time, it really is not a problem.

MerryTraveller · 02/11/2024 18:50

My mother got very drunk on strong homemade martinis when unknowingly pregnant with my brother 50 years ago. He's now a Harley St consultant.
I shouldn't worry about it.
Second trimester is the most important one to avoid too much alcohol, apparently.

o didn’t know I was pregnant and went on every ride at Alton Towers and drank ridiculous amounts of alcohol for the whole week I was there!

ReggaetonLente · 02/11/2024 18:56

I did it too OP. Including a night where I had to be carried home 😬I have a healthy, happy, sharp as a tack 6yo sat next to me now.

I wouldn't worry, women used to drink Guiness as it was 'good for iron levels'.

Unless you were blootered everyday it will be fine.

sel2223 · 02/11/2024 20:34

Yep.

I've had a particularly busy summer with social events and occasions so felt like I was drinking a lot. Then was actually on an all inclusive holiday when I suddenly threw up at breakfast and decided to test!

I stopped the second I saw that positive test.

My mum always tells me how they brought her a pint of Guinness on the ward after she'd had me!
I'm a NY baby and she thought they were just being kind bringing her something for the festivities , she didn't realise until much later that it was to do with the iron levels after blood loss 🤣

favledesire · 02/11/2024 20:45

You will be fine

I found out at 6 weeks and I had been to bloody Ibiza for a wedding also back home went out 3 times, drank vodka, shots, vaped, ate from very questionable establishments and was also terrified.

As soon as I found out I didn't touch any of the above and all was well.

mongoliandoll · 02/11/2024 20:46

I imagine a good chunk of the population were born to mothers who drank before they knew they were pregnant.

LozC0411 · 04/11/2024 08:50

I went to Creamfields festival when I was about3/4 weeks (I didn't know) and obviously drank a fair bit... I'm now 14 weeks with a healthy baby 🤗Don't stress OP x

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/11/2024 08:52

I drank a lot at my own 40th birthday party a week before I found out I was pregnant. My bonny and robust 5 month old is currently kicking and singing very happily in his bouncy chair. Don't give it another thought OP, and congratulations!

PockerMaus · 04/11/2024 17:49

Thank you so much guys 🥰

I think the initial shock has worn off and I can think about things a bit more rationally.

I really appreciate reading all of your experiences!

It happens a lot OP I wouldn't worry about it make sure you start taking folic acid asap though , congratulations x

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/11/2024 17:56

I got really drunk the week before I found out I was having my only child. I’d been trying to get pregnant for years so didn’t think about not drinking. She was born perfectly healthy and is now a very feisty and happy 11 year old.
