Lump around belly button line when sitting up

Hi all,
I’m currently 23 weeks and when I go from laying to sitting up, a cone shaped lump forms in a straight line up from my belly button. Has anyone else had this? I’ve only noticed it today.

Thanks 😁

Yes, it’s diastasis recti. It happens when the abdominal muscles separate. It’s fairly normal, but can be treated with physio after birth.

As PP has said. My physio has said to immediately stop doing anything that’s causing it. If you are sitting up from laying down you need to first roll on to your side and then get up, don’t get up directly from off your back.

Thankyou both. Do you know if I gets better on its own or can I do anything?

No you’ll have it now until after you give birth - I have it too. Just be careful with how you get up and try and not do anything with that movement if you can so it doesn’t put pressure on it. After you give birth you can do exercises to sort it out and it sometimes gets better on its own. Really common so don’t worry. 😊

That’s common and normal in pregnancy because your abdominal muscles are obviously separating. Most women’s will then go back normally to 90-95% closed afterwards in normal healing which is considered closed for a postpartum woman, but if it stays separated a particular amount it’s treatable with physio and surgery if very severe. But for now that’s normal no need to worry.
