Measuring behind and slow heart rate

HI, wondering if anyone has been in any similar situations and can offer some insight, good or bad.

Sorry might be a bit long winded.

So LMP 15th July. Found out I was pregnant 15th August. By the end of August I started bleeding so went to my local EPU. They scanned me at that point (should be 5 + 6) and could see sac but no baby and advised me to come back in 9 days.

I went back to EPU for another scan (should be 7 weeks exactly going by LMP). Saw gestational sac, baby measuring 3.5mm and heartbeat. EPU said I was measuring a week behind at 6 weeks exactly but strong heartbeat so no concerns. No need to come back until my 12 week scan.

3.5 weeks later, I had a private scan. Going by LMP I should be 10+4 (or 9+4 going by EPU scan). They saw a yolk sac, baby and a heartbeat. They said baby was 4.5mm and had a very slow heart rate. They dated me at 5+4 and referred me back to EPU.

my local EPU can’t see me for a week, obviously expecting the worst and a lot of heartbreak but wondered if anyone had been in any similar situations? I have saw some threads of people measuring behind and catching up but I feel like this is very unlikely considering baby has only grown 1mm in 3.5 weeks? Just unsure as there is still a heartbeat although slow 😢

I know my dates are correct and I got my first positive clear blue (saying 2-3 weeks) 7 weeks ago but baby is only measuring 5+4 now. Thanks

I had similar and sadly it ended in a miscarriage. It’s a horrible position to be in. Sending hugs.

I thought that would likely be the case. Thanks for your reply, sending love 🤍

Hi OP, I don't know what the outcome to this will be but didn't want to read and run.

If you measured 6 weeks pregnant when baby was 3.5mm, I'm struggling to see how 4.5mm would make you less than that? Hopefully you can get some answers at your next scan.

Good luck

Sorry OP, this does sound like a miscarriage. It's hard to see how it could be a viable outcome with those dates. I am sorry, it's devastating. Take care of yourself.

Hi,

yeah that’s exactly what I was thinking? Surely one of the clinics has been wrong with dates as I don’t understand how baby is bigger but less gestation? I have a scan on Friday so praying for a miracle but also very realistic about what the outcome will be.

thank you

I had a very negative experience with a private clinic. They zoomed into “baby” dated it and said there was no heartbeat. I was sent to EPU who then found baby which had a heartbeat. They dated me a week behind and didn’t seem bothered that I had tracked etc, I was seen a week later and baby had grown exactly a week but a week behind still.
unfortunately I had a MMC and baby stopped growing at 9 weeks. Which was still in line with the EPU dates a week behind.
there is 2 points 1 was this can indicate a MC but it also shows that private scans can and do get things wrong.

I am hoping that the private scan was wrong in your case and everything works out perfectly. Sending you lots of positive vibes xxxxx

Sadly private scans are just not set up for bad news at all, they are there to take the money, scan you and give you a souvenir on the way out. It was utterly horrendous when I had a MMC and found out at one. You’re not in a hospital setting and they can’t advise anything so you’re left just to worry and Google.

If I’m being honest, it sounds like my miscarriages (I’ve had 4) and they have all been the same. Slow development and slow heart rate and then just nothing.

I’m really hoping that’s not the case for you OP but I don’t want to get your hopes up. I would just wait for the NHS scan next week and go from there x
