Hi all,

I'm 13 weeks 1 day today I've had my dating scan 1 week ago and they said everything was fine heartbeat etc.

HOWEVER I have got a doppler because before this pregnancy I had a missed miscarriage and I can't find the heartbeat.

I'm.also.panicking because my sympotms have disappeared apart from slightly tender breasts, gas and constipation (which I think it's because of the progestone pessaries).

Also when does a bump start to grow.

I just need some reassurance

Congratulations! Someone will suggest in a minute that you ditch the doppler as it will just make your anxiety surrounding your pregnancy worse. It's a skilled job finding the heart beat.

Bump depends on lots of different things. Body shape, strength of ab muscles, whether you have been pregnant before. It'll come soon enough. I was about 16 weeks before I saw anything like a bump. I'm 12 weeks now with the second, and trousers are tight already.

Book in a private scan if you're worried. A doppler at this stage is near impossible. There's a reason the midwives don't even use them this early on. The baby is about 7.5cm long and usually still tucked deep behind the pelvic bone or slightly above it.

Please don’t use a home Doppler, at best it will add to your anxiety and at worse it could be really dangerous.

I didn’t have a bump until 20 weeks and symptoms came and went all the time. Not trying to be dismissive as I’ve had multiple miscarriages but don’t let your anxiety run away with you.

This, please bin the Doppler

This is exactly why they tell you not to use an at home doppler - many trusts have even stopped the midwife checking for the heartbeat at the 16 week appointment as it was so hit and miss as to whether it would be found and caused more anxiety than good.... and that's with trained professionals doing it week in week out.

In my first pregnancy, I barely had a bump at all until the 3rd trimester! I even went for an MRI scan at 30 weeks and the person scanning got a shock when she saw a baby in there as she missed that on my notes and you couldn't tell at all when I was lying down! She couldn't believe I was 30 weeks pregnant!

As for symptoms, it's very normal for them to reduce or go completely around 12 weeks when the placenta takes over. I'm only a few days ahead of you and my symptoms have reduced a lot over the last week or so

Snowdrops17 · 27/09/2024 09:27

Do not use a Doppler !! They pick up the placenta and your own heart beat of your not trained you have no idea what it's picking up . I know it's a really anxious time I've been there but honestly put the Doppler away it's going to make you feel way more anxious

As above posters have said I’d try and avoid the Doppler… I know when you hear the heartbeat it’s such a relief but at 13 weeks baby will still be so small
i recently went to maternity triage at 26 weeks for reduced movement and it took them 20 mins to find baby’s heartbeat with a doppler as the baby is still small enough at even this stage to hide away in there so I think they’d have really struggled at 13 weeks
I had a miscarriage last year so I understand the anxiety and constantly wanting to check baby is okay, so I ended up having a couple of private scans alongside nhs ones
