Waiting for the 12 week scan

Hey! I am nearly 5 weeks pregnant. I have my scan booked for when I am exactly 12 weeks. I'm just looking for other mums to keep me company while waiting. We lost a baby in July at 8 weeks, surgery at 10 weeks so I'm so anxious and nervous. We got a private scan at 8 weeks last time and baby's heart stopped beating at 8 weeks 2 days so we're not spending the money on a private scan this time as it makes no difference! Our scan showed everything was well and heartbeat seen so we were obviously heartbroken and shocked. Anyways, please join this chat if you want some company x

Sorry for your loss.

My first pregnancy was a missed miscarriage. I went for a private scan at 9 weeks, it had stopped at 6+ but my body was full of symptoms still (not sickness but I had nausea, tiredness, needing the toilet). The downside for me is my body couldn’t miscarry properly so it took over 7 weeks after that scan before I had surgery to fully end it.

So the next pregnancy I said there’s no point in going for a scan. At 8+4 I lost all my symptoms (no sickness, nausea, etc). I panicked and went for a private scan at 9+2. I thought I’d rather get the process started than wait 7 weeks if it’s ended. I got good news though, my symptoms shortly returned at 9+4, and that pregnancy went on to result in my son.

Im pregnant again now, hoping for a second child if we can. I said the same thing as before, at 8+4 my symptoms disappeared and I knew what to expect this time. Only I have gone past 9+4 still symptomless and I’m now 10+0 and still nothing. I’m used to being sick until 14 weeks with my son. So I have booked a scan for Friday. I think I would still rather know now. I know it’s only a snapshot in time, but my brain has gone to worst case scenario.

@Blue2020 hiya, Sorry for your loss too 😔
That sounds horrible, 7 weeks and to have surgery in the end anyway 😔 with my first I was only 6 weeks along but bled for weeks after, luckily I didn't have to have intervention. This summer it was a MMC so I was feeling pregnant the whole time. I had brown discharge (what I now realise started when the heartbeat stopped) I completely shut down and I just couldn't bare going through it naturally or just waiting so I decided to have the surgery. The literal worse thing ive ever gone through, mentally and emotionally. Physically I was shocked about the little bleeding, minimal pain and had a period exactly 28 days after surgery. Im amazed at what our bodies can do but it dosent take the heartache away at the bad stuff it does too.

Congratulations on your pregnancy now! When are you due? From dates of last period I'm due 30th May. I have to wait 4 more weeks for midwife appointment and 7 weeks for my 12 week scan. Please let me know how you get on Friday 🤞🤞🤞

@user1480703514 I forgot to say congratulations to you as well. I hope this pregnancy is smooth and uneventful for you.

I would be due on the 23rd April I think. At least you have a midway point to focus on, the midwife appointment. Then it’s not as long to wait.

I know what you mean, my missed miscarriage and the whole process is the worst I have been through too. My mood was very low. My body did try to miscarry at 12 weeks while I was waiting to see the epu. That was horrible to go through, so the surgery to me was good, because I had already had 7 weeks. If the surgery had happened at 9-11 weeks I might have felt differently about it.

@Blue2020 sorry to hear you've struggled. The whole process is just so stressful 😖 miscarriages and bad experiences definitely take the joy out of it. It's hard not to compare isn't it? The last midwife appointment I had at 9 weeks my baby had died and I had no idea until the week later, so everything's tainted. I'm trying to just focus on this as a new pregnancy, new experience, new life. Its a long wait 😬😬😬

@user1480703514 thats a really good approach to take. For my second pregnancy that was very much true. Try to think positive, easier said than done I know.

SErunner · 25/09/2024 22:17

I'm really sorry for your loss. Posting to hopefully give some hope - I had a miscarriage in May then conceived again in June. Am now 15 weeks and all looking well. The wait for the 12 week scan was torture, I feel your pain. Hoping for a good outcome for you x

@SErunner thank you! Congratulations on your pregnancy! I am trying to stay positive but the MMC seems so recent that its hard to enjoy this one until the scan. Trying to quietly stay positive! We aren't telling a soul apart from my boss (she needs to know because of my work) until the scan which is why I'm feeling extremely lonely this time round. Xx

Hi all, hope you don't mind me joining this...
First of all, congratulations everyone, I hope you all have a happy, safe pregnancy❤
I'm currently 8 weeks 2 days pregnant and it's my first pregnancy, I thought the wait till 12 weeks is bizarre, I'm a very anxious person lol, so I caved and booked an early scan which is today. I know anything can happen so it may be a bit pointless, but the long wait is so stressful as all of my symptoms have gone for the last 4/5 days...

Blue2020 · 26/09/2024 11:29

@LozC0411 congratulations. Good luck with your scan today. I know how you feel, my symptoms have disappeared since 8+4 and I’m now 10+1 so my anxiety is building. I have a scan booked for tomorrow.

Congratulations to you as well lovely!🤗
It's so scary especially if it's your first time going through this, while I'm glad my nausea has stopped, I miss it because at least then I knew I was pregnant as I felt it...
Good luck with your scan tomorrow❤

Congratulations! It is very stressful so far, I cant believe how little help/advice etc you get from healthcare providers in the first 12 weeks.. x

@LozC0411 no it's kind of down to us to research as much as we can. Even doing this multiple times I learn something new every time. Knowledge is power!

This might sound a silly question, but where do you usually look for advice, tips etc? I feel like there's only so many times I can re read the nhs website🙄

user1480703514 · 26/09/2024 13:58

@LozC0411 books! do you have an app as I find them useful for week to week knowledge. Try and get booked into classes too with your local midwifes, even 3rd time round I found them reassuring and calming, I swear we give birth and just forget it all 😂

It went really well! I’m measuring 7w6d which is only 3 days behind what I had thought, Saw the heartbeat which was amazing🥹

Waiting for the 12 week scan
Blue2020 · 27/09/2024 06:00

@LozC0411 that is great news. Glad it went well. There is always some inaccuracy in the measurements anyway due to how small they are, and even just the equipment accuracy.

user1480703514 · 27/09/2024 06:16

@LozC0411 ah amazing!! Congratulations. That date will probably change and be set at your 12 weeks as it will ne so much clearer. So you have about 5 weeks until the next one? Do you have any symptoms yet? X

Yeah the lady who did the scan disclosed that and to always listen to what the NHS say over them, but it wasn’t too far off what I had guessed so I’m happy x

I’ve had symptoms for the last 2 weeks, really bad nausea, loss of appetite, food aversions, soooo tired all the time😂 My nausea has gone the last few days but the sleepiness is still there! And yes roughly 5 weeks to wait which seems like an eternity 🥲
How are you feeling? Any symptoms ? X

user1480703514 · 27/09/2024 08:22

@LozC0411 I am exactly 5 weeks today, last few days sore nipples, bit sicky feeling in the mornings but nothing major and only for 5 mins or so, lower back pain is unreal! Cramping and twinges on and off and dizzy spells every now and again. With my other successful pregnancies I felt awful for the whole 40 weeks. I'm 36 now so I'm hoping my body takes it easy on me lol xx
