First pregnancy - when did you start to show?

This sounds very vain I know but I have a few weddings/events coming up and am dreading the "I look fat, not pregnant" stage. When did people here start to show and, more importantly, start to actually look pregnant?

I had a bit of a tummy by 5 months, but not noticeable unless you were looking carefully, just a slightly loose top was fine, then was 'showing', as in looking pregnant at about 6 months.

Bky · 21/04/2008 15:10

I had a small bump around 18/20 weeks, which could easily have been covered by looser style top/dress.

I think i definitely looked pregnant by about 24 weeks.

bethoo · 21/04/2008 15:17

about 20 weeks

cyteen · 21/04/2008 15:20

Same here really...I had a little bump from about 16 weeks but it was easily disguised by empire line stuff. I'm 22 weeks today and there's no mistaking it now!

jess1396 · 21/04/2008 16:23

Well i didnt even know i was pregnant or anyone else i went to the docs and they told me. i was already over 19 weeks y then, and noone knew let qalone me. so i think the time you show is depending on the persons body.
But some nice tunic top with a cardi or something would cover up a small bump.

good luck in finding an outfit. x

Becky77 · 21/04/2008 16:31

I didn't look definitely pregnant until 6 months, before then I just looked fat

caramelbunny · 21/04/2008 19:58

Same as Bky. Still looked pretty normal at 18 weeks, could wear jeans (quite low though). Didn't really have bump until 24 weeks.

VivalaDiva · 21/04/2008 20:00

I was massive by 10 weeks. Could have been the excess of potato waffles I'm not sure.

ShowOfHands · 21/04/2008 20:02

7 farking weeks. A colleague asked if I was pg. By 12 weeks I was in maternity clothes. My Mum was the same with me. I couldn't hide it, even though I desperately tried.

Swedes · 21/04/2008 20:05

20 weeks when I could no longer wear my normal jeans, even with one of those elastic button extenders.

Ambi · 21/04/2008 20:07

same as becky, didn't really show until about 6 months, but also didn't get massive at the end either.

georgiemama · 21/04/2008 20:11

Between about 12 and 18 weeks was quite hard, didn't look fat as such, it was all tum, not that much of a tum but enough that ordinary jeans/suit trousers/pencil skirt was hopeless, but maternity clothes were mahhoosssive on me. Bought a couple of size ten maternity tops (I'm a size 16) because my real clothes didn't fit.

I found it very hard to find anything to wear during that period - in the end bought a fab pair of stretchy black trousers with no waistband, just a really long stretchy panel from Jjojomaman et bebe. They were about 40 quid but I wore them all the time from that point on until I went into hospital to deliver. They were fabulous, and I plan to dig them out and wear them to eat Christmas dinner every year!!

By 22 weeks I had a proper neat little bump and felt great. I miss my bump....

MrsTittleMouse · 21/04/2008 20:15

I told everyone at work when I was 14 weeks, and none of them had noticed. I did point out that my body had changed quite a bit, but they thought that I was just fat. I ended up enormous and no-one had any doubt!

HairyToe · 21/04/2008 20:17

How tall are you? Everyone is different but taller women tend to show later as obviously there is more room in there and in the early stages all foetuses are similar sizes.

I'm 6ft tall and had a bit of a pot belly at 20 weeks (although you wouldn't necessarily think I was pregnant unless I told you) - didn't really start to look obviously pregnant till 6 months. I remember at 38 weeks I was a similar size to a couple of friends at the time who were 30 and 32 weeks.

HairyToe · 21/04/2008 20:20

Having said that I'm only 5 weeks now with pregnancy no. 3 and my jeans are really uncomfortable. Although I get the feeling thats more cake/chocolate than pregnancy (well if you can't drink???)

Minkus · 21/04/2008 20:46

28 weeks with first baby (although had lost lots of weight before due to hyperemesis so although there might have been a bump most people I knew prolly didn't notice it as they thought it was my normal pot!)

About 20 weeks with this one- again had lost weight through olympic scale vomit-fests but bump is def bigger this time.

A friend started showing with her first at 12 weeks- as in properly showing not just looking a bit preggers if she stuck her tummy out. Was v jealous she looked great all the way through and never had the "are you pg or just a bit porky" stage.

How far along are you? Bet you'll look great whatever, weddings always bring out the best in folks.

elkiedee · 21/04/2008 20:50

I'm not typical but I didn't really really look pregnant until about 7 months and at about 6 months someone told me I'd lost loads of weight. I hadn't actually, but I only gained 4 lb between 12 weeks and 40+ weeks, mostly in the last few weeks. It was partly because I felt really ill and couldn't eat a lot of things I normally eat, and occasionally threw up and normally felt sick throughout. My mum lost 2 stone during each pregnancy due to being sick all the time.

Natalie1984 · 21/04/2008 20:57

bout 4 months people noticed id put weight on bout 5 months i look preggers now im almost 6 months and theres no mistakening it!!!

AHLH · 22/04/2008 14:59

I'm 19 weeks and started with maternity jeans last week (although one pair of very low cut normal jeans still fit OK). I have a small bump, but it's definitely baby shaped to me , rather than just tummy flab.

We are also off to a wedding next week and I am concerned that I look fat rather than pg. Which is a bummer, but maybe I should just stop being so vain!

MrsMattie · 22/04/2008 15:01

I looked like I was a bit thick around the middle until 5 months. By 6 months I had a big bump.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 22/04/2008 15:56

I've had a proper bump for about 3 weeks - so 16-17 weeks.

SoExcited · 28/04/2008 18:41

I'm 5ft 5 and was 9st 2.
My normal trousers are too tight already (11 weeks). I've put on 6lbs and my muscles seem to have reacted quite quickly. I have a thick waist clearly visible to me and DH, but not to anyone else yet. I think it'll be obvious in a few more weeks. Everyone is different, although I think when your mum showed is supposed to be an indication (if she can remember?!)

jingleyjen · 28/04/2008 18:43

5ft7 - DS1 maternity trousers @ 16 weeks proper bump by 20 week scan
DS2 maternity trousers earlier, definate bump by16-18 weeks

AHLH · 28/04/2008 18:57

Proper bump now, no longer vain, love it!
