Background:

  • At the time of this post, i am just over 11 weeks pregnant. Currently, only my husband and i know as we are waiting until sometime after our 12 scan ( scan is when I’m 13 weeks).
  • Over the last two years, I have put on a lot of weight going from Uk 12 to 16, mainly due to stress. E.g.in 10 months i bought a house, started my 2years masters, got married and had a missed miscarriage.
  • During the same two years my mum has started her fitness Journey.
  • Its important to note that I come from a Caribbean household and talking about weight is very normal. E.g. Anytime, I am around my family my mum will make comments about me needed to lose weight. Particularly when I eating - it does not matter if I am eating healthy or not. Or I might get a comment about my weight via FaceTime.
  • I have had comments from my Mum,Dad and sister in weeks or so. & I am sure other family member would have something to say but i haven’t seen them.

I have never been happy about my weight so as you can imagine, these comments are emotionally deflating sometimes. I am also in the awkward stage of pregnancy where i am hungry all the time, gaining weight, and out of breath from small tasks.

Question:
Has anyone been in a similar situation and how did you navigate comments about weight around your family?

Hey!
I didn’t want to read and not respond. I’m in a similar situation, this past year I bought a house, had two miscarriages, took a managers position at my place of work and have dealt with a lot of family illness and the weight just pilled on, now a size 18. I am currently 11 weeks pregnant and have been extremely stressed after my miscarriages and my grandad parents started passing comments about my weight not being good for the baby, this really upset me. However, I am pregnant and so far this is a healthy pregnancy and the furtherest I have ever made it during pregnancy , I’m eating an average diet and eating when I’m hungry! I’m not depriving myself of food or strict dieting when I need food to stop me feeling sick and give me the energy to stay at work. Concentrate on you and your baby and try not to let comments get to you, you are going to gain weight in your pregnancy and there is nothing you can do about that, as long as you are looking after your mental and physical health that is all that matters right now!
