Anyone recently told they'd have a small baby...

But baby ended up bigger?

Our baby is apparently quite small. He's varied between 3-9 centile over the last few months. We've had weekly scans with specialists. He'll be coming out early next week and his current predicted weight is 5lb 3oz.

Everyone I speak to seems to know someone who was told that their baby would be tiny but actually, was born much bigger. These are all stories from the 90s though, where presumably things were less accurate? And also second and third-hand stories.

I don't have long to wait to find out, but I'd love to know if anyone here was told their baby would likely be very small but was actually born larger than expected?

Are you and the dad small? My baby was 2.9 kg at birth, so was I and his dad. Genetics plays a huge part

So my husband is shorter than average. But our first baby was 7lbs, and we were both born at 6.5/7lbs too. Not sure how much that plays into it though!

I had weekly growth scans from 30 weeks and was told he was measuring small and to pack small baby clothes. He was 5 days overdue and weighed 7lb 10oz. This was 10 years ago.

Hi
I am 9 weeks PP.. I had to have my 2nd baby induced at 36 weeks. On my 35 week appointment my baby had dropped to the 3rd centile. Measuring 4lb 8. He was also very still on the scans over the next few days (i had gestational diabetes). Was taking hypo's and ended up induced at 36+3. He weighed 5lb 5oz. They had an incubator ready for him when he came out but didn't need it at that time. It took him a few days to feed. (Bottle fed). His temp dropped down to 36.1 and we were kept in for almost a week until it regulated and stayed around 36.6 (so maybe prepare for that). He was also very jaundiced and ended up back in under the light. But hes doing absolutely amazing now. Infact you would hardly think he was a prem baby. Little bruiser 😊 Hope my experience settles you a bit

I was told ds would be small. Nobody believed me when I was 40 weeks pregnant. He ended up being 8lbs 14oz.

Devilsmommy · 28/08/2024 17:09

1 week before mine was born I was told he was only measuring at 5lb. 7 days later he was born 6lb7oz. I wouldn't put too much stock in their measurements. There's many threads on here of baby being born a massively different weight to what they were told.

InTheRainOnATrain · 28/08/2024 17:10

Does 3YO count as recent? But anyway scanned at every appointment by a consultant and was told to expect him to be 6lbs-ish. I suspected it was wrong as it was my second pregnancy and I felt like he was bigger than my first who was 7lb13 and low and behold I was right and he was 8lb3 when he arrived at 39 weeks!

sel2223 · 28/08/2024 17:18

The growth scans and measurements in my first pregnancy were way out.
I was told all the way through I was having a 7-8lb baby. Very average, around 50th centile etc.
She was born by section at 38 weeks weighing 5lbs 10oz. Teeny tiny and we were totally unprepared so my mum had to rush out for smaller nappies and tiny baby clothes.

Groundbreaking · 28/08/2024 18:11

My second kept measuring small, had to have regular growth scans, told to buy tiny baby clothes, potentially giving birth at the specialist hospital, etc. She was 7lb 9!

My first was the opposite - predicted big but turned out small so maybe that influenced the decisions around my second, I don't know.

OtterOnAPlane · 28/08/2024 18:51

Both my DDs measured small but not worryingly so (with regular scans for other reasons).

They were 6.1lbs and 6.3lbs, so the scans were fairly accurate.

popplego · 28/08/2024 18:53

SIL was told that DNiece would be very small and was induced at 37 weeks, she was about 6lb so not particularly tiny for that gestation.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 28/08/2024 19:13

DD was predicted to be small - they were concerned about IUGR, so I had to have about a million scans, but she came out a teeny but perfect 6lbs 1oz, so the 10th centile when she'd been predicted to be on the 8th centile. She had tons of hair and long dark lashes and she looked like a doll!

She's 16 months now and she's tall! 75th centile for height and 30th for weight. Sadly she never got gorgeous chunky baby rolls.

WhiteRose222 · 28/08/2024 19:30

Our youngest was measuring small (less than 10th percentile throughout) and ended up being 5lb 12oz at 39 weeks. My eldest was also small-ish (6lb 13oz), again at 39 weeks.

Me and their dad are average height but I'm quite overweight and diabetic so they wondered why my babies were small (as often with diabetics they can be on the larger side).

My eldest is now 7yo and tallest in her class and the youngest - 14m - also quite tall!!!

lljkk · 28/08/2024 19:52

Ultrasounds & baby born in 1999: told he'd be huge, was actually 6.5 lbs.

Measured small in 2008, ultrasound said average, ended up born on 94th percentile.

My mom was told she was getting too fat as a pregnant person ... she actually had twins. Nobody knew she had twins, 1958.

Thanks so much to everyone who has replied! Seems like they get it wrong all the time. We've had weekly scans with a specialist consultant so I find it so hard to believe they might be wrong - but I'm really, really hoping they are. Fingers crossed the baby is a little bigger than we're anticipating.
