Omeprazole in pregnancy

Hi all, this is my 4th pregnancy, but I only have one living child from the 1st pregnancy. Since then I have sadly experienced a MMC on the 2nd and TFMR at 22 weeks on the 3rd. Understandably I’m extremely anxious about something going wrong this time.

I have always had terrible heartburn that Rennies just won’t cut, so the midwife had prescribed me omeprazole. Midwife says it is safe to take, even in the 1st trimester, but I can’t help panic about little things I’ve read online about not risking it.

Does anyone have experience of taking omeprazole during pregnancy, including 1st trimester?

Thanks in advance

I had it from 4-5 months, didn't cause issues. It's quite common to prescribe omperazole alongside antiemetics with hyperemesis from the first trimester.
My daughter also has problematic reflux and has been on omperazole since 8 weeks and is now 4.

It's fine to take it in pregnancy. Your midwife wouldn't have given it to you otherwise.

Hi my doctor told me not to take Rennies as they are not approved for pregnancy but gavison is fine apparently, have also been prescribed omeprazole my my gp to help with the heartburn!
Im only 14 weeks but its really bad and unfortunelty only had hiatus hernia repair surgery last year to stop my reflux but having huge issues with it again for the last week!

I've taken it since 6 weeks pregnant, now 35+5

I take 40mg omeprazole every day and have done for years. I took it throughout three pregnancies without any problems.

I take omeprozole anyway everyday but I've recently found out I'm pregnant. I called my doctor and he said they're absolutely fine to take.

So sorry about your losses. I took omephrozole throughout my last pregnancy (heartburn was killer) and it was my life line. I couldn’t have got through the day or night without it. Definitely safe to take, I was reluctant too but desperate.

Gaviscon (and rennies) work systemically so it’s impossible to overdose. I was drinkng gaviscon from the bottle and going through 1 a week.

Down sides of PPIs is they can reduce your gut intake of vitamin and minerals due to reducing the stomach acid. There shouldn’t be any problems taking it but if you don’t feel comfortable then wait till 12 weeks and try to make it though with gaviscon etc
