The baby is born with two ‘soft spots’ in the fontanelle (skull). The first one fuses around 9 months and the second between 1 and 2 years. When the baby is born you can feel these obviously only gently and actually a sunken soft spot is a sign of dehydration.

And congratulations!

Thr normal brain has some fluid filled spaces in it called ventricles and the dark on the scan is fluid.

But baby is very far from being fully formed at 8 weeks anyway so still a lot of anatomy to grow yet. If you're in the UK this will be checked at the dating and anomaly ultrasound scans around 12 and 20 weeks.
Congrats!

They would mention if anything was untoward at this stage but honestly right now the Thoracic region is in development which includes the brain and it isn't set to complete until a few weeks later so this is all normal.

The anomaly scan at 20weeks is when they check the key areas including the brain for development.

Congratulations!

They would’ve done. All I had at DD’s 12 week was they couldn’t see the full nose bone and it wasn’t a great cause for concern but they’d keep an eye so they’d definitely say about the skull. It was fine by 22 week scan. Honestly it’s all ok. I know what it’s like though.

Could take a good guess as to the sex of your baby with that heart rate. It always held true for all mine anyway.

sel2223 · 21/08/2024 14:06

Congratulations OP

What an incredibly clear scan..... I've just been today and measuring 8+2. Scan pic nowhere near as clear as yours!

My first scan at 7 weeks looked weird - my 4 year old asked if he was getting a fish for a sibling.

In general, 140+ is a girl. Boys are usually slower. I have 5 kids and it worked for all of mine. I'd take it with a grain of salt but it's a bit of fun. I don't think science validates it at all.
