What to expect from scan at 8 weeks?

I have a private scan booked for tomorrow when I’ll be 8+1. Has anyone else had a scan at eight weeks, and what was your experience? Is it likely the baby will be visible abdominally at this gestation?

Hey, we had a scan at 7 weeks (IVF baby) and then another scan at 10 weeks due to bleeding. Both scans were internal. I don’t think they would be able to see the baby abdominally at this stage. Most private clinics seem to advise that at that stage it will be an internal ultrasound x

@babydue2025 Do you have any specific concerns?

First baby I had an internal scan. Second baby was normal US. Both at 8 weeks so depends on the clinic, first was window to the womb second was imaginatal

I had an abdominal 8&2 scan. Saw a bean with arm buds and a heartbeat :)

I had an abdominal scan at 8+2 with my first baby and she was clearly visible, had a strong heartbeat etc.
I've now got a scan booked for next week when I'll be 8+1 and hoping for the same (it's a different clinic this time so don't know if they'll want to try transvaginal instead - I had that at 6 weeks anyway and it was absolutely fine).

If you Google 8 week baby scan pics you'll get an idea of what to expect.

I had an abdominal scan at 8 weeks, could see heartbeat and it visibly looked like a baby. A big difference from the scan I had at 6 weeks due to bleeding, which was also abdominal but not much to see. But just remember there’s no guarantees even if ok at that stage.

I just had one and it was delightful (and TV)

with my first - I had a TV scan at around 7+4 (IVF pregnancy) and then promptly fell down the stairs about a week later and ended up in a&e/epu . Thst scan at was abdominal. It definitely wasn’t as clear as the TV but still pretty good. However theysaid the clarity depend on how much weight you carry in that area as to the clarity (I’m a size 6 and don’t carry any weight on my front - all goes to my bum 😂)

I also had an abdominal scan at 8+4 and baby was clearly visible, arm and leg buds wobbling around and heartbeat visible. I think they'd usually try abdominal first at this point then do an internal if needed. Hope it goes well.

Thank you everyone. Hopefully abdominal will work for me, but I’ll be prepared if not. I’m one of those people who likes to know what to expect, so knowledge is power. It’s why I can’t wait another four weeks for the NHS scan. I’m also a bit worried that based on how dark my early pregnancy tests were and a Clearblue test which was measuring 3+ at one week, I’m either ahead of dates or having twins! But hopefully it’s just my HCG was higher than normal. I’m feeling quite nervous tonight, but fingers crossed for good news.

@babydue2025 I like to know what to expect as well.
My BFP came back with one of the darkest lines i've seen and my symptoms seemed to be really bad early on so I had an early scan to rule out twins (only one in there thank goodness)

Good luck with your scan

Update, the scan was today, the baby was heathy, measured exactly how it should be and there was only one. It was an abdominal scan, I drank loads of water beforehand. It was a bit fuzzy, especially when zooming in, but everything was perfectly visible. Seeing its heartbeat was so special 💜
