Private scan was wrong !!! Stressful 24hours

I went for a reassurance scan yesterday and was told I was 7+1 which was bang on with LMP, However there was no heartbeat and no visible yolk sac. She showed me the “baby” and said she was sorry. I was then booked into the EPU today.

i was seen by 2 x senior sonographer’s who saw a baby , heartbeat and yolk sack. I showed them the report from the private clinic and the clinic was scanning a gestational sac bump instead of a baby. I hadn’t stopped crying after the no heart beat, I told work I wasn’t in because I lost a baby. I told my mum and BF mum we had lost the baby. I didn’t stop crying for 24 hours, I didn’t sleep one wink the stress of waiting for the inevitable miscarriage was so stressful.

my issue is I know exactly when I ovulated and I only had sex once so know my dates. I should be 6+6,5. I am measuring 6+1. Can this be normal is there a bit of Lea way this early. The sonographer said a lot can change in a week and may find I catch up or the baby is so small to measure it may be slightly off.

I feel happy but also so sad that it’s not measuring bigger. I am so cross with the clinic. I appreciate mistakes can happy but to be so sure the baby didn’t have a heartbeat and was so sure what she was measuring was a baby is ridiculous.

feel very nervous x

Hey OP, I saw your earlier post yesterday - I'm so pleased to see your updated thread, lovely news. Baby is so small at this stage that a few days really isn't a worry I don't think. I measured a week behind with no heartbeat at one of my early scans and by the next scan 2 weeks later baby had caught right up. Congratulations and enjoy this wonderful time x

ShoehornSheryl · 02/08/2024 21:19

I saw your post too and I’m pleased all is ok. It’s very hard to measure at this stage and the tiniest bit out can affect as much as 10 days! I’m sure it’ll be more in line with yo if expectations at your 12w scan.

congratulations x

DoreenonTill8 · 02/08/2024 21:20

Oh @Joleyjojo what a stressful start to your pregnancy, am so pleased for you with your updated news. The measurements will change as you go. Have you given your midwife a ring?

Ducksurprise · 02/08/2024 21:23

My fourth baby I had one sexual encounter as I was working away and only came home for one night.
This didn't match with the dates from LMP or the size of the foetus. The midwife kept telling me I was wrong.
I gave birth five weeks early according to them and two weeks according to me (I'd never gone to term) and baby was exactly as you'd expect a 38 seeker.

So yes, pregnancy doesn't fit with expectations. Glad you've had better news

WhiskeyInTheJar33 · 02/08/2024 21:54

I saw your post yesterday and am glad it's more positive news for you today. Baby is soo small it's hard to measure. I had a scan at 6+1 but was told I was measuring 5+4 (also saw heartbeat). This is an IVF pregnancy so my dates cannot be wrong! A week later I had a scan and was measuring spot on where it should have been and continued to measure exactly to my ivf dates until I had scan at 10 weeks. Then between this scan and 12 week dating scan it had a growth spurt and was measuring 4 days ahead!

I really wouldn't worry about a few days out. It will catch up! The main thing is you saw the heartbeat which is a really positive sign!!!

Am805463 · 02/08/2024 21:57

I believed I was 6+2 and measured a week less with a heartbeat, he caught up and was actually measuring ahead at my 12 week scan and all was fine. Hope everything goes well for you.

Jada2024 · 02/08/2024 22:14

So sorry about your stressful 24 hours!
My dates were changed early pregnancy due to measurement of the baby. Then a few weeks later baby was measuring small and I was told baby was about 5 days behind size wise. Then in later pregnancy i have been told several times baby is measuring big. I am currently overdue and they have me doing everything possible since 38 weeks to try get baby moving as they feel baby will be on the chunky side!
Try not to stress too much

Private reassurance scans should be banned. They cause so much anxiety.

LER2023 · 03/08/2024 09:11

What @User79853257976 has said.. I completely agree.
mine was the other way around though. I went to a private scan, she told me she’s seeing a gestational sac measuring 8 weeks and told me it was a perfect little sac. But she couldn’t see inside it but said it was fine because baby will just be hiding and I apparently have a tilted uterus which is why she couldn’t see. Nothing to worry about. So me and my partner toddled off in the best mood knowing our third pregnancy is actually sticking and we’re not going to have a 3rd miscarriage.

a week later. I started bleeding and having backache and cramps in my stomach. I went to the EPAU, and said baby would be measuring 9 weeks as I’d had a private scan the week before and she told me it’s perfect it’s 8 weeks, and there’s no problems just that I have a tilted uterus and she couldn’t see inside the sac.

to our surprise, but also not a surprise after 2 miscarriages, she scanned me and I was ready to miscarry.

sac was measuring 9 weeks as the private clinic said I was. Wonderful right?
the baby was measuring 6 weeks and 2 days from crown to rump and it didn’t matter that I had a tilted uterus or anything because she’s seen what’s actually going on. I had a very sever subchorionic haematoma that was all around the sac pretty much suffocating the sac it was that bad. There was nothing they could do they couldn’t wait for the baby to catch up to the sac, as it would never happen, so instead they wanted me to come back a week later to see what else was happening if it was just the haematoma breaking down and wondered whether the sac had enlarged for maybe twins or something but before I got to the second week, 3 days later I naturally miscarried.

it was the most heart breaking thing on the planet.

never trust a private scan, they’re SO incorrect!! And like previous poster said. They should be banned, or people should be able to choose a private scan after 10 weeks at the least. Not 7.
im sorry you had to go through that, it’s amazing that baby has a heartbeat!!x

Jessica1993x · 03/08/2024 09:24

Oh my god!

I'm having the same problem.. I went to a private scan last night I should be 7ish weeks but measuring 6+1 and no heart beat detected I'm so scared. I need to go to epu in 2 weeks for rescan. What company was it with? I think we have spoken before! I'm glad everything is OK for you xxx

Jessica1993x · 03/08/2024 09:25

I also have a hemorrhage! I went because I had a bleed Thursday night which was the hemorrhage which some of which is still there. Xx

Joleyjojo · 03/08/2024 13:46

Thank you everyone. I’m just so scared of having our hearts broke again Friday fingers crossed the news will be remain positive.
@Jessica1993x im so sorry your going through this. Have you got any pain? I am hoping you have a positive outcome too. Why do you have to wait 2 weeks? I was seen the next day. The private clinic was an independent one in West Midlands x

Jessica1993x · 03/08/2024 13:59

No pain no. I bled because of the hemorrhage in my womb. Baby still there measuring 6 weeks 1 day he did say tho it could be to early. Mine was window to the womb xx

Jessica1993x · 03/08/2024 13:59

I'm not sure he just said re scan in 2 weeks x

Cappugcino · 03/08/2024 14:01

Private scans are fine just to get some extra scan photos, they should be banned from giving any further info though. Sadly your experience isn't unique, and it's awful.

Joleyjojo · 03/08/2024 14:03

Did the private scan tell you to go in 2 weeks or did you speak to someone in EPAU? If that was the scan persons view I would call the EPU yourself and not mention the private scan advised 2 weeks. When they didn’t find the heartbeat the clinic called my local EPU for me and got me in the next day. Window of the womb wasn’t where we went x

Agreed.

I’m so happy for you OP but from my day job I see so many stories like yours. We spend most Monday mornings unpicking the horror of weekend private scans. Costs the NHS thousands a day.

Congrats on your pregnancy x

Mammma91 · 03/08/2024 14:10

I’m so sorry for the stress you were under OP. I’m glad baby is viable. I’d be annoyed with the clinic too. Yes, it is very common for the dates to be slightly off. I have 2 children and both dates were off, both babies born between 37+38 weeks. I had one scan private second time round who measured me 16+4, I was 18+6, following week at a growth scan (nhs) I was measuring 19+6. I just use NHS scans now for baby, I found private stressed me out too much and I was paying a lot of money for it.

Sandyankles · 03/08/2024 14:35

Glad everything is looking more promising. I am so old that I hadn’t heard of ‘reassurance scans’. It sounds awful - am I right in thinking that it involves paying g lots of money for an unqualified person to ‘reassure’ that everything is fine? I’m shocked that it is allowed. First scans are at 12 weeks for a reason!

Yes he told me to contact epu for re scan in 2 weeks or go back to them. I took a test 27th June which was negative I then retested 8th July strong positive clear blue 1-2. 12th July again with clear blue 2-3. I'm hoping everything is OK and my dates are off. I have my first midwife app Tuesday and window to the womb told me to take the report with me xx
