Hi.

i am due to start a new job this month. I was offered the job back in July but waiting on DBS checks means I’ve still not got my start date.

i have just found out I’m pregnant, very early days.

what do I do now? I feel so bad this isn’t ideal for my new employer.
do I tell them before I sign my contract etc or wait until I’ve started work then tell them?

Anyone been in a similar situation with advice. 😑

Congratulations!

Tell them whenever you are ready to. They cannot legally withdraw your contract or penalise you because you're pregnant - that would be pregnancy discrimination. So your employment should continue as normal. Your entitlement to SSP may be affected though as you're starting a new job. The benefit you get by telling them early is to ensure you can get paid time off for appointments etc. and so they can carry out any necessary H&S risk assessments.

Try not to worry about it. Most employers don't care/mind (in a nice way) as it makes no difference to them- they should just be focused on supporting you and then arranging a potential cover when you're off. I think it's a strange cultural norm that people get worried about informing employers they're pregnant.

All the best

Thank you for your advice!

i think for my conscience I would like to tell them when they offer my contract. Then like you say, they will allow me to leave for appointments etc as they are going to start not long into my role.

why does everything happen at once ey 😁
