6 week scan is it worth it

I’m 6 weeks and wondered can they see anything on the scan at this stage?

At 6 weeks you would have a vaginal scan and see very little. You may not even have a fetal pole et and this can cause unnecessary worry

If you have a history of miscarriages and want some reassurance then you can try an EPU but don't be too concerned if they can't see much

isitfridaay · 01/08/2024 12:54

Wait until 7 or even 8if you can

They you will have a better idea of dates etc.

6 Weeks they may only see and egg or a fetal pole and I did not find this reassuring.

I wouldn't bother until 7+4/7+5 sort of time when you might see a heartbeat.
If your expected ovulation date is out by a couple of days then any earlier can be very anxiety provoking

Olivie12 · 01/08/2024 13:34

Wait until 7 week, sometime 6 is too early.

Peonies12 · 01/08/2024 13:38

Not unless you have pain or heavy bleeding. good private scan places shouldn’t be offering til 8 weeks - the amount of women on here who have private scans earlier than that and get inconclusive results is shocking, it just causes unnecessary stress. I wish there was more regulations of private places

Try and wait until the 12 week one. There are posts on here every day saying nothing or very little could be seen at 6 weeks.

Mini6666 · 01/08/2024 18:40

I thought as much.
I think I will wait for 12 week

Ive had multiple miscarriages and 2 babies.

I think a scan at 8-9 weeks is worth it. 6-7 is too early as if your dates are out it can cause unnecessary worry. But having had 3 mmcs that were picked up quickly I’d also hate to get to 12 weeks thinking all was fine only to find that the baby stopped developing weeks earlier. If you see a heartbeat at 9 weeks the odds of a successful pregnancy are overwhelming so I’d go for one then.

I didn't for my 1st but did for my 2nd.

With my first, I had an easy pregancy and didn't feel any need for extra scans.

My 2nd was after a missed miscarriage and I was hugely anxious so had a 7 week scan for reassurance. I didn't want to go any earlier in case of an uncertain scan.

Olika · 01/08/2024 19:44

I had a scan at around 8 weeks (because I had previous MC and needed to know) and it wasn't very exciting as you cannot really see anything. If you don't need it for the peace of mind then just wait until your 12 week one.

Louise0808 · 04/08/2024 15:42

I had a private scan at 6 weeks and it wasn't vaginal. Could see everything clearly ( what you'd expect to see at that stage anyway). It was worth it to me because I'd had numerous ectopics and miscarraiges so my anxiety was high.

Happytimes123456 · 04/08/2024 16:06

Why are you having an early scan? You can see a tiny heart beat and that's about it!!

sel2223 · 04/08/2024 19:19

If you Google 6 week scan and then 8 week scan and then look at the images, you'll see a huge difference to what can actually be seen.
Plus 6 weeks is hit and miss for a heartbeat which will only cause more anxiety.
Personally, if try and hold out those extra 2 weeks if you can

Sometimes that's all you need 💔

A (NHS) 6 week scan saved my life. It identified an ectopic pregnancy.
I would go for any additional scans medically recmended. I wouldn't pay for a private one at 6 weeks.

HuggingAnIcePack887 · 06/08/2024 03:58

I had a scan at 8 weeks and I was so happy I did! It confirmed everything was going well and we cried when we heard the heartbeat.

I wouldn't go for 6 weeks, too early. But I could not have waited for 12!

Seeing my child's heart beating was incredible.
I was 7-8 weeks.

Cliedi · 06/08/2024 04:41

I was an anxious mess with my 2nd. I genuinely couldn’t focus at work. I waited until 7 weeks to get a scan and it turned out my calculations were wrong and I was 8 weeks with a heartbeat. I read somewhere that the risk of miscarriage drops to 1% if you see a heartbeat at 8 weeks so it reassured me massively and I was able to relax for the month between that and my first NHS scan. I think this was good for both me and the baby.

sparkles79 · 06/08/2024 05:44

I had a scan with dc2 at about 7 and a half weeks, but that was because I fainted and they wanted to make sure the pregnancy was in the right place. I did see a jelly bean with a heart beat but was warned before they scanned me that if it was in the right place I may not see a heart beat as it was early. Good luck!
