Has anybody had a coil and it failed as contraception? Or fell out without you knowing ? I feel off but had the copper coil in a few mnths ago . Is it really rare to fall pregnant on the coil?

Happened a friend of mine, she had a coil inserted during her c section and it fell out without her realising...4 months later she was pregnant.

I think it's quite common. I know coil twins and a coil baby

Yes I fell pregnant with a coil in place. He's now 7, I still feel that initial shock sometimes!

i have never been able to feel the strings but not sure that's an issue. I might test if I don't come on by Sunday !

Do you think I'd know if it had fallen out? 😐

One friend didn’t realise it had fallen out - she was baffled but her coil baby is now 13. Another friend has some unexpected failure with her coil and was rubbished by her GP being told she could t possibly be pregnant. That coil baby has just finished year 3.

WitchyBits · 26/07/2024 06:55

My DNwas born with the coil wrapped around /between her toes. Another friend got pregnant on the coil 3 months before it was due to be renewed and had an abortion.

caringcarer · 26/07/2024 07:39

My sister had a coil. Once inside her it somehow moved out of place. She got pregnant but did not realise until almost 4 1/2 months. She had the baby and coil delivered tangled with afterbirth. Midwife was surprised 😲.

That's crazy thanks so much for sharing . Just seems like they say it's more than 99 % effective but realistically is that when it's in place and no issues with it moving? Wonder how often they fall out etc ? Crazy really :/

My friends coil went missing. Was never found but no pregnancy luckily as she didn’t want more children. She only found out as had some other issues and when being checked they commented that it wasn’t there anymore.

Steveandaggie · 26/07/2024 19:54

My coil baby is 3 after I had laparoscopy while pregnant to remove it from embedding in my bowel. It had punctured my uterus.

MelainesLaugh · 26/07/2024 19:59

Yup I know one. Baby was born holding the coil! She’s currently refusing to go to bed because she wants to see the Olympic horses.

Oddly it also failed with my mum but she was late 40s and had an abortion

eryuod · 26/07/2024 20:04

It's not "common" but as with any contraception it isn't 100%, it's just over 99% but that means almost 1 woman out of every 100 will fall pregnant. So it will happen, and there will be lots of stories out there, but it's still statistically unlikely to happen to you. Happened to me, but miscarried, the coil creates an inhospitable environment that has a high likelihood of miscarriage if you do fall. They sometimes use coils as emergency plan B contraception due to this.

eryuod · 26/07/2024 20:05

That said, always test to be sure if you're worried, coil pregnancies have a higher chance of ectopic so important to get checked early.

AuCo44 · 26/07/2024 20:06

My coil didn't fall out and I swear by all that's holy I could still feel the strings. I was still menstruating (or so I believed). I went to my GP because I felt generally unwell and was asked if I was aware I was 20+ weeks pregnant. My DD is an absolutely amazing addition to our family even though a complete and utter surprise. I already had two sons and a daughter, and to have another little girl was such a blessing.
