I'm not able to find any ultrasound scan photos that show the placenta at 7 weeks. Does anyone know if it's possible to see it on a scan at this stage in pregnancy/ have seen it that early before?

Not until at least 11 weeks.

It's still the corpus luteum at 7 weeks. Most placentas won't have formed by 7 weeks

Topseyt123 · 14/07/2024 17:19

I don't think much of it has formed at 7 weeks, so no.

It forms and is ready to take over supporting the baby's life at 12 weeks. So I understand.

Radiographer here.
No that is normal. You won't see it really until after 12 weeks snd thats with experinced eyes. Patients won't be able to see it. Fully identifiable and presented well at 20 weeks.

Would you be able to see the corpus luteum inside the gestational sac at 7 weeks possibly?

Why do you ask? Have you lost a lot of babies?
You sound so worried, and I hope you're okay

Corpus luteum is on an ovary, not in the gestational sac.

I am worried and haven't been feeling too well. I had a scan at seven weeks, and there's a big pulsating shadow above the baby and the yolk sac is at the bottom, but I'm not sure what it is and I can't find another baby scan photo similar at all. No one seems to know what it is and I have to wait till my next scan. I haven't seen this in my other pregnancies either.

That's what I thought but I'm really reaching right now.

Do you want to post the photo but crop out your details? See if anyone has seen anything similar?

These are screenshot photos from one of the videos from the scan. It's also visible on the actual scan photos too.

Did the sonographer say anything about it? I'll have a good look through all of mine and see if I have anything similar

They didn't mention it at all, they said they saw no bleeding or cysts and that the yolk sac will be there until the placenta takes over/ forms fully enough.
What was weird though, is that she kept saying there's definitely one baby in there over and over during the scan even though she didn't really look around but I didnt ask or show any concern over it.

This was at 9 plus something. Pulsating whatever at the top a little similar to yours. Was just distortion from the scan etc. baby was fine at 12 week scan and 15 week scan.

Placenta is at the back now so defo wasn't placenta

Thank you! I feel a little more relieved now.

I’ve just checked my video and stills from 7 weeks and I have the exact same thing. No idea what it was/is, but am happily in my third trimester now!

Looking at my video again, I agree with @Onefellfromtheappletree that it’s just some kind of distortion being picked up. Nothing to worry about 😊
