Maternity allowance deductions

Hi, I’m just wondering if anyone has had deductions taken from maternity allowance. I was in full time employment until February, and now on maternity leave and started receiving maternity allowance as of yesterday as I wasn’t with my previous employer long enough to receive SMP. I took a universal credit advance out over 3 years ago and they’ve never deducted anything from my wage the full time i have been in employment since then. I get £184 a week maternity allowance and they’re looking to deduct £64 a week from this universal credit advance over 3 years later. Has this happened to anyone? it’s barely any money as it is and losing out on £64 a week is a lot with a Baby on the way. I don’t receive any other benefits either 🤯I thought they could only deduct from UC, or JSA or any of those benefits.

Dwp can deduct debt from any benefit. You should really have paid it off while you were working.

As I advised above I had no idea about it until I received the letter today, I thought they had automatically taken it off my wages as that’s what they advised they had been doing in the letter they sent out.

Oh I see I thought you had assumed they had forgotten about it as it wasn't taken off wages.
