Early scan or no?

Hi all,

I'm 5 weeks pregnant today, me and my partner are toying with the idea of having a 8/9 week scan to check all is okay rather than waiting for the 12 week one with the NHS?

We’ll obviously be paying privately for an early scan.

Just wanted some honest opinions on whether anyone who had done an early pregnancy scan thinks it’s worth it/ at what week you had it etc?

thank you 🥰

I was going to book an early scan with my first pregnancy but didnt so I was a bit over 12 weeks when I got heartbreaking news and had carried a lost pregnancy for six weeks. Never again!! I appreciate, as others have said, that things can go wrong at any time and I might go for 8 and 10 weeks and just prey in the weeks between but as someone has mentioned somewhere above on this string, i really think first NHS scans should be at 8 weeks. Its a flipping long time to have to wait for a first scan and missed miscarriages in the early weeks appear to be rather more common than one might be led to believe.

My mother had that too with her first pregnancy! Baby stopped growing at 6 weeks! Found out at 12 weeks scan and still have every symptom she was pregnant. She didn't passed naturally at 14 weeks so had surgical removal. She's always advised to get an early scan and to her. Once you've seen the healthy heartbeat you can then relax. In her case the baby never developed a strong heartbeat which is the case in most early loss around that time unfortunately. I feel reassured more now that I've seen my 8 week pregnancy beating away. I'd recommend one at 8 weeks to anyone!!

We got one at 6.5 weeks (internal exam) because we had a miscarriage the month before and it’s the best thing we ever done. Gave us so much reassurance to see the wee heartbeat.

I had a private scan at 7w3 days where a heartbeat was detected and later found out that the baby stopped growing at 8w3. I didn't find out until 11w2.
In my previous pregnancy which was successful I had an early scan (with a private obgyn) at weeks 6 and 10.
I don't think I will ever get peace of mind from early scans now following a MMC, However if I do get pregnant again, I would only consider scanning with a private doctor/midwife as opposed to those places set up for gender reveals etc. I would need the medical point of view.
