IVF fertilisation rate

Hi all, I did my egg retrieval yesterday and had 20 eggs collected. They said both the eggs and sperm looked good on paper so went with IVF (rather than ICSI) and unfortunately found out today that only 5 had fertilised. I’m worrying now that I won’t end up with any blasts. Has anyone had a similar experience and had success with only 5 embryos on day 1? Thanks!

Statistically, you get 40% of fertilised eggs getting to blastocyst. On my first EC I got 7 eggs, 5 fertilised, 2 blasts. Pretty textbook. Second EC I got 16 eggs, 9 fertilised, 7 blasts. No rhyme nor reason with that round!

It’s a stressful wait and no guarantees, but I think it is more likely than not that you’ll get at least one to day 5. Your embryology team will be keeping an eye on them, sometimes if it’s not looking positive for getting to day 5 they’ll do a day 3 transfer instead, so maybe ask about their policy.

Fingers crossed for you!

Hello.
We had icsi so not quite your circumstances but I only had 5 egg retrieved, only 3 suitable for fertilisation. Of that we ended up with 2 grade A embryos. I am currently 37 weeks pregnant after having one embryo put back. It is a really hard waiting game but you have a starting point. The thing to keep telling yourself is that it only takes one. I know it is much easier from the other side but you have a chance.
Wishing you the best of luck.

IvF is nerve wrecking, and every day has its own worries. Good luck with your cycle, 5 fertilised eggs is a good start.

In my last cycle (41year old, trying for 5 years, 2 previous unsuccessful cycle with slightly more eggs/blastocysts than this time), I got 7 eggs collected from 14 ovaries, 5 fertilised and 3 of them got to the blastocyst. We transferred 2 in April, both implanted and shown up healthy on the 7 week scan. I lost one of the twin later but I still had the other baby growing at 10w5, although measured 8w6. I will have another scan on Friday, at 11w1. There is no reason not to beleive that everything is OK, but obviously worried.
