Hi,

I’m just curious to see if your midwife tried to listen to baby’s heartbeat at your 16 week appointment?

Thanks 😊

She offered, but immediately said it can be difficult to find at 16 weeks so she wouldn't recommend it, so we didn't take her up on it. Then as soon as we left the appointment I got sad about it and made my husband book us a private scan so we could listen to the baby 😂

Hey yes midwife found baby's heartbeat at 16 week appointment x

WhyamInotvomiting · 21/06/2024 13:48

My midwife did in first and third (current) pregnancy but I'm pretty sure they didn't in my second pregnancy. All different midwives but at the same hospital and second and third midwives in the same team.

Bells3032 · 21/06/2024 13:49

Didn't offer. i did ask but she said she can do it but often can't find it and causes panic so if i want it i'll have to understand she won't refer me for a scan if they can't. i said i understood. she did it and took a bit of time but found it

sleepandcoffee · 21/06/2024 13:49

Yes both pregnancies she offered and found the heartbeat

YouveGotAFastCar · 21/06/2024 14:02

They don’t here. I asked if she would, and she said she could, but if she couldn’t find it, she couldn’t refer me for a scan. I agreed, she couldn’t find it, she got a bit panicked, did refer me as she was concerned, and the hospital rejected the referral, and I was in a state. The

I’ve got friends who weren’t referred and also found that really difficult.

Its nice to hear but I’d probably leave it a few weeks until it’s easier to find, the stress it causes if it’s not found isn’t worth it, I don’t think.

DownWhichOfLate · 21/06/2024 14:07

She tried to and couldn’t! It was quite stressful even though she kept saying she was sure it was fine. Then a long wait for the 20 week scan.

justanotherlaura · 21/06/2024 14:24

Midwife did in my first pregnancy but not in my second, she had a student with her and I think she was probably doing everything by the book as I don't think they're supposed to offer anymore but older midwives still might as they have always done it

Starbiscuit · 21/06/2024 14:36

Thanks for all of your replies! It’s interesting to see the responses from different areas. In my last pregnancy (10+ years ago 🥴) they listened in, but wasn’t sure if it was still the same xx

Listened at every appointment 16 weeks onwards. Took a couple mins to find but obviously got easier as baby bigger. By the time he was born my DH could listen to his heartbeat by putting head on my bump.

Peonies12 · 21/06/2024 15:23

Yes mine offered, with the caveat it's not always possible to hear. She heard fine.

MariaVT65 · 21/06/2024 15:24

Did at mine but my understanding is that it very much differs across different trusts and you may not be offered it.

Welshcake15 · 21/06/2024 16:53

They don't offer to listen to the heartbeat with the dollar until 24 weeks in my area.

UnravellingTheWorld · 21/06/2024 17:15

Yes, mine did and then the student with her had a go as well. Student had a bit of trouble finding it, but got there in the end

malimoon · 21/06/2024 18:02

Mine did. I'd had an extra scan earlier that week (an early anatomy scan after a higher risk screening result) so I was pretty sure baby was fine and she did find the heartbeat right away

Catopia · 22/06/2024 07:33

Mine was at 17 rather than 16 weeks and she did. Took a bit of time to find it and I had to get up and have a wiggle to get little one to shift position a bit.
