best items for babies what's worth it

My niece is have a baby the first one what are the essentials and what are the best items to get against what is with it.

That's kind. I'd go for some essentials for the first cold - decent in ear thermometer, frida snot sucker thing, baby vicks, calpol, bar of chocolate and good coffee for the exhausted parents etc

Would never have bought the snot sucker thing myself but in a moment of desperation I gave it a go and it was a godsend. And the thermometer is used so frequently - when DC is grumpy and out of sorts, I go through a mental checklist of tired, hungry or getting sick - super useful to have a reliable one.
