Which herbal teas safe in pregnancy?

The advice is incredibly confusing out there…

there are various lists of which herbs can be safely had as a tea during pregnancy however they all vary! For example, some sources say that nettle tea is absolutely safe, and others say to avoid it. The same goes for peppermint, lemon balm and others 😫

I know this topic hasn’t been researched and so therefore the advice is to better avoid than risk it.
However my gut says that almost all herbs should be fine as a tea, since herbal infusions are very weak and likely not potent enough to have a huge effect on the body. I could be wrong, but I feel like this would make sense…

If you have successfully gone through pregnancy before, would you mind sharing what herbal teas you had?

I drank all teas while pregnant. You'd be better off asking your midwife in case the advice has changed.

Yikes, I've been drinking peppermint tea and strawberry tea and haven't given it a second thought. This is my third pregnancy and I didn't even know some herbal teas were to be avoided.

Just follow NHS advice-which doesn’t even mention any teas.

I’ve googled this as well. I think the confusion is that it brings up information about taking herbal supplements and also teas which you actually brew from the ingredients as well rather than just your bog standard Twinings! I’m pretty sure flavoured teas are absolutely fine.

That’s really good to know! And just confirms what I have been thinking. “Food amounts” are supposed to be safe, as in a normal amount of a herb that you would eat in cooking, therefore having an infusion of that amount should be absolutely fine. The more I think about it the more I think that most teas should be fine in moderation…

@Kateeeeeeee my other two children are completely normal so I think we will survive 🤣

I drank peppermint, lemon & ginger and berry tea throughout both pregnancies and have two healthy little ones.

They are fine, it’s just about ensuring you don’t have 18 cups a day of anything.
