Sea Swimming whilst pregnant

Hello. I live by the sea and usually I'd have a dip over the Summer! I wondered if any of you continued to swim in the sea whilst pregnant?

I'm pretty careful anyway in terms of sea swimming (not staying in long, making sure to check that the beach is clean, showering afterwards, keeping warm).

I've read some of the guidelines but wondered if any of you had personal experience of doing it?

Didn't occur to me not to. As long as theyre not dumping sewage why wouldnt you?

Peonies12 · 10/06/2024 09:43

Yep I’ve done it - both sea and unheated outdoor pool. I was just careful not to get too cold, always changed straight away and had hot drink. Went loads whilst on hols! I’d only be cautious if there is pollution in the sea but you can check this.

Check whether the water is clean where you want to swim. Am seeing more and more about the sewage dumping and people getting ill.

It wouldn't have occurred to me not to.

the only thing I'd do now (if you're in the UK , is check the water quality, but I'd do that pregnant or not)

as others have said but also if it's sunny make sure you're wearing a decent suncream as your more susecitable to burns when pregnant

If you want to swim in the UK I’d advise against it. The water needs to be clear of sewage.

MumChp · 12/06/2024 06:55

Why not?
Never thought it was a problem.

Wherearethewaves · 12/06/2024 10:05

Yep- swam in the sea through 2 pregnancies, just skipped really cold mid winter dips...

Uncooperativefingers · 12/06/2024 10:09

Agree. Especially if you already do it so your body is used to the water

Check the sewage status - there's an awful lot of dumping now, and reports of triathletes falling ill after events which include sea swimming (e-coli levels found to be 39x the typical reading according to newsreports after an event in the NE)
