Echogenic bowel - what to expect/experiences

Hi all,

At my 20 week scan the sonographer found an echogenic bowel.

Ive had TORCH & CF screening, results are due back in the next couple of weeks. I have a referral to foetal medicine and an appointment has come through for tomorrow for a detailed consultant scan. Can anyone share their experience of what is likely to happen?

The midwife I spoke to after my 20 week scan outlined I would possibly be offered an amniocentesis, would they perform this tomorrow after the scan or would it be a case of going back at a later date for it? I think if we are recommended to have one we will go ahead, I’d just like to be prepared in case there is any chance they would want to do it tomorrow straight after the scan!

Praying everything is ok with baby!

Hey how did it go? I also had this at 20 week scan and then ended up having amniocentesis which didn’t show anything thankfully. my baby girl arrived safely and is 6 months old now and totally healthy. I hope all went well for you!

@JosieK8 thank you for responding and glad everything turned out well for you! We were referred to foetal meds and the consultant didn’t really recommend an amino; so we opted to have a private NIPT done instead which has come back as low risk for everything, so just keeping fingers crossed everything is ok!

Great to hear! Yes I had amniocentesis as my torch screen indicated i may have recently caught cmv but it turned out not to be that…such a stressful time! I had a few extra growth scan but echogenic bowel faded by week 32 and I was discharged from fetal medicine and had an amazing water birth with the a midwife. Try to forget about it now :)

My best friends youngest was told they found an echogenic bowel also.
They feared the worst, although no other screenings came back high risk. He was absolutely fine - no issues he’s a healthy four year old now :-)
