I have a friend who is really having a tough time with her pregnancy and wondered if anyone else out there has been through the same.

She had the triple test early in her pregnancy and the tests showed she had 1 in 45 for Downs and 1 in 35 for Edwards syndrome. She had an amnio done afterwards and it came back all clear. Thankfull that baby was ok she looked forward to 20 week scan yesterday and they have now told her that they can see cysts on the babys head. Although they have told her that they can dissapear before 26 weeks she is understandably worried that there is something wrong with the baby.

It is her second baby and she had no problems with first so it has come as a bit of a shock to her and to make matters worse her husband is in Afghanistan till August.

I really feel for her and wondered if anyone else has been through similar or been told they can see cysts on baby?

Any advice would be grateful

HI, no experience of this, but feel very sorry for your friend, especially if her dh is away. It makes it so much harder when the partner isn't there, and then, of course she will worry about him being away anyway, assuming he is in Afghanistan because he is in the Forces....!
Well, at least I am bumping the post up for you!

Thanks 3andnomore (VERY APT NAME IM EXACTLY THE SAME)

Yes her DH is out on the front line which is really hard for her, he will hopefully be able to get back for birth but not definate.

I really just want some good news from people who have been told the same and their babes have been fine. I know it isnt the same but it might just give her a bit of hope.

Assume these are choroid plexus cysts? They are an extremely common finding, and many Trusts now don't report them as they are pretty meaningless if there are no other markers on the scan. The only 'link' then (ie, when other markers are present) is really with Edwards syndrome, and as she's had the all-clear from the amnio there's absolutely nothing to worry about. I feel for your friend - she deserves to relax and enjoy these last few months!

Oh thank you so much Diege.

Not sure what the cysts are called exactly but I dont think the docs are too concerned it has just been a huge worry for her. And she has another 6 weeks to wait for another scan which will feel like a lifetime to her.

I just feel so sorry for her at the moment, its hard enough she is coping on her own with another little one to look after and I know she is worried about DH (she watched all the Ross Kemp in Afgan progs)which I dont think will have done her much good.

I will let her know about your thread and hopefully it will put her mind at ease a little

No problem . I've had a few frineds have the same at their 20 week scan - they really are very common, and are now starting to be seen as normal physiological development. I do feel for her though with what she's been through, and her home situation. Hopefully knowing that the cyst is 100% not a problem though will be one less thing for her to be anxious about
