As the title says really.

I booked an early reassurance scan assuming I was around 8 weeks. My LMP was 27th Feb. I got my first positive test on 25th March. It was very faint, but I tested about a week afterwards and it was significantly darker. I did another test about a week ago as I hadn’t really had any symptoms and it was a strong positive that came up straight away.

Anyway, at the scan today she said I was measuring about 6 weeks, and that the measurement was 5.5mm. She could see a yolk sac, a pole and everything looked as it should, however, she couldn’t detect a heartbeat.

I have attached an image of the scan.

Is this possibly the start of a miscarriage?

I’ve had no bleeding, and if anything I’d say my symptoms have really kicked in over the past week. Nausea, sensitivity to smells, headaches and extreme tiredness, so I don’t know what to think right now.

Does anyone have any advice?

If no heart beat was detected and you are sure of your dates, it doesn’t sound so good unfortunately. But I’m no doctor, so hopefully I’m wrong!!

When I was pregnant with dd1 I had some bleeding early on so was booked an early scan at my EPU. By my last period date I was just over 6 weeks but exactly the same as you they could see everything but a heartbeat. They booked me a further appointment for 2 weeks later to re scan and see if anything had progressed and sure enough there was a heartbeat. They then put my dates back by almost 2 weeks. I have 4 children and had my due date put back every time once I’d had my dating scan. Frustrating to be told you’re not as far along in your pregnancy as you thought (and hoped lol) but obviously a lovely relief when that’s the only reason you can’t see what you would be expecting on the scan. Hope everything works out ok for you xx

Assuming that this was a private scan, did they book you for a follow-up scan to see if there's any growth, or advise on a referral to your local EPU/EGU?

Unfortunately measuring that far behind isn't a good sign, although it's not a guarantee that the pregnancy isn't viable - you could have ovulated/implanted late (if you weren't tracking ovulation). Assuming nothing changes physically for you (bleeding, pain etc.) you will need to be scanned again to see if there is any growth or if a heartbeat can be found. Good luck.

Sorry, I forgot to mention in my original post that I am booked in for another scan in 10 days.

Hi Beenzzandcheese, sorry to hear you are going through this. I’m going through something similar. Got my BFP on 28/03 and went for a private scan at what I thought was 7+2 on 19/05. Sonographer told me I was measuring 5+5 and asked if my dates could be wrong. I was doubtful given the early positive test but there was a flicker of a heartbeat so I was hesitantly optimistic as I hadn’t tracked. I contacted my local EPU with the report from the private scan and they rescanned me yesterday. Unfortunately the embryo had only grown marginally, not what they would expect to see in a week, so they didn’t think my pregnancy would be viable. There was still a heartbeat, it was slow and steady. They are rescanning me next week but she advised that it’s just to see if the heartbeat has stopped yet. They’ll continue to do so weekly until it does or I pass the tissue. I have had some blood stained tissue and cramps, not sure if it’s the beginning of the end or just from internal examination. Such a horrible thing to go through, the waiting and the not knowing. Still holding out hope when I know I shouldn’t. Praying you have a better outcome. ❤️

In my first pregnancy I had slight bleeding when I was around 8 weeks and a couple of days according to my last missed period. I went to EPU and they scanned me and measured me as approximately two weeks behind where I would have been according to my LMP. So similar to you. However I do think there was a heartbeat detected as I don’t recall being overly worried as it had taken ages to get a positive test and I think I must have ovulated very late. I went on to have a healthy pregnancy and the child is now 18!

I’m so sorry to hear this, I had a very similar experience which sadly didn’t end well. You definitely need to call the EPU and get booked in with the NHS. Sending big hugs x

@Beenzzandcheeze I'm so sorry, it's so stressful when scans don't go as expected. I've measured two weeks behind before and that ended in a miscarriage, if you're sure of dates unfortunately I would prepare for one too x

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 26/04/2024 20:17

This happened to me and it was a missed miscarriage. For me they could see a heartbeat but it was beating extremely slowly but I was also measuring two weeks behind. I was sure if my dates as I had been tracking so I knew it was a miscarriage as soon as they told me. I always find these threads to be upsetting because there are inevitably people who come onto them and give the OP false hope. I'm very sorry that you're going through this. It's devastating. X

@Beenzzandcheeze

I am sorry but what @Bonniexx was my experience unfortunately.

I hope you have a better outcome 💐

I have five children and have always scanned later than LMP. They said this is due to.my cycle being longer than the average 28 days.

TheShellBeach · 26/04/2024 20:56

I hope you get good news, OP.
But being realistic, you need to be prepared for this to be a miscarriage.

Flocke · 26/04/2024 20:59

It really is just a waiting game. Unless you tracked ovulation there really isn't any way to know. It's very possible you ovulated later than "normal".
I had an early scan at 7 weeks. Measured 5.5 with slow heartbeat. I knew it wouldn't be viable as I tracked ovulation so knew I didn't have my dates wrong. A week later the heartbeat had stopped. I had symptoms the whole time though. In fact I still had pregnancy symptoms for 2 weeks after I had surgery to remove it.
But as others have said if you normally have a long cycle or dont track its possible it will be fine. All you can do is wait at this point.

H20202 · 27/04/2024 03:24

6w heartbeat and measuring correctly. At 8+heartbeat had stopped and no growth and I miscarried a few weeks later with help of medical management. Sorry op but doesnt Sound too good. Hope I’m wrong! X
