Has anybody experienced this? I'm so scared. It's been very dark blood. I had a speculum yesterday as I've been experiencing a lot of fullness and pressure but I'm so scared, I haven't heard of spotting this late on. I'm at the maternity ward but I don't think they're going to scan me, I really can't lose him.

I'm sorry, I have no advice but I didn't want to read and run. I hope someone comes along soon with some more helpful advice.
Are you being checked out?
There is an option to book a private wellbeing scan if they don't provide you with one now. There are lots of private scan centres around. That may offer you peace of mind.

I imagine the bleeding is from the speculum but call up your MAU and i am sure they will check you over to see what is going on.

I had a bleed (red blood) at 19 weeks. DD was fine, couldn't see any reason for it on a scan.

Dark blood is old blood and probably caused by irritation from the speculum.

Fingers crossed for you.

Thank you all. They've listened to his heartbeat and they're doing another speculum exam but I'm still so worried, having mild cramping too. They said it's probably caused by the speculum though. Going to book in for a private scan asap, I've already been for a few. Pregnancy is such a worrying time :( x

Did you have the blood before you had the speculum? If not I'd say it's the speculum that's caused irritation and the bleeding

They looked at my cervix and said it looks like contact bleeding and it appears them inserting the speculum again caused a bit more blood so they warned me I'll probably bleed for a couple more days. I went straight to a private scan clinic immediately after the hospital and she also said my cervix looks fine and baby looks completely fine so feeling a bit relieved. Just so awful seeing blood at this point in pregnancy when you're really not expecting it. Thank you all so much x

I completely understand how worried you’ve been - I’m 18 weeks, and last week I had a bleed (so when I was 17 weeks). I was terrified that I was losing the baby, but after several hours in A&E, they confirmed that the baby’s ok. I had to wait a week for a detailed scan at the hospital which couldn’t find any cause, but honestly I’m just pleased the baby is well.

That worry is the worst feeling and I hope you’re ok.

Thank you so much and I'm so sorry you went through the same thing, it's just absolutely awful, isn't it? Really not something you expect in the second trimester. I hope you're okay too, especially having to wait a week for a detailed scan, torturous when you're so anxious x

@minnieot It was an awful week - I was chasing them every day to let me know when the scan would be and they didn’t let me know until the Friday that I’d be seen on the Saturday (the bleeding was on the Monday and was still spotting all week).

I’m ok now - anecdotally a couple of people have told me similar things happened to them when they were stressed or on their feet all day, so I’ve had my work risk assessment updated to minimise time spent on my feet as much as possible. Might be something worth thinking about for you as well?
