Brown discharge turning red 7.5 weeks pregnant

Hi guys.. I'm 7.5 weeks pregnant and yesterday had some brown discharge. It was a tiny amount and this morning a tiny bit more then nothing all day until a bit more this evening but it was tinged with red. I spoke to the GP earlier who said there's nothing to be done to see if I've had a missed miscarriage until the scan but I've not even had an appointment yet. If this doesn't turn into a is carriage I'm worried at the prospect of not knowing if this pregnancy is viable for another 4 weeks! Are there any reassuring stories out there?! Obv I'm worrying about the worst...

Have you considered having a private scan? That’s what I did every time I had a scary bleed. Also if you are worried, just go to you early pregnancy it clinic and they will examine/scan you.

I will see if we have one and try to go tomorrow, thanks! Did it turn out ok for you? X

Hi OP - I had this with all three of my pregnancies and they all turned out fine. Never given any explanation for it, each time it started brown, turned red and was as heavy as a period for a day or two - very scary at the time but doesn't have to be bad news.

contentsmayb · 23/04/2024 07:09

I had two different outcomes. I had a miscarriage once when spotting turned into proper period. And I also spotted brown and had bleeds on and off and sometimes very strong and everything was okay. Like you GP said, there’s no way to know, only give it time.

Hi OP, any chance you can get into the EPU for a scan? I had this with both my miscarriages, I lasted two weeks with both, I had scan in the mean time which showed everything was fine until it started bleeding. The second one I knew was going to go the same way as the first I actually had 2 scans at that one. I pleaded for progesterone but they said they couldn't prescribe it and my GP wouldn't prescribe it. It makes me angry still now that I didn't have the chance to potentially save it. (Sorry for the bad outcome but I'm hoping you can get progesterone in the meantime to help if it is needed)
On the other hand my friend who just has a baby had brown bleeding, red bleeding on and off for pretty much the whole first trimester and everything was grand, she had her baby in Jan!
Wishing you luck ❤️

I'm sorry that sounds worrying, and stressful to be expected to wait until your scan that's week's away. I don't understand why the doctor would say that, I'd think this is the kind of thing when early pregnancy unit is there to help with. Do you have the number for your your early pregnancy unit?

Bleeding isn't always a bad thing during pregnancy. I've had several losses, including 2 ectopics. All started with low grade back pain, cramps, and bleeding, which was either spotting to full on bleeding.

My last pregnancy I had a bleed at 6wks with cramps and right sided pain, a bleed at 11 weeks, 20 weeks and then a major bleed at 37 wks when they finally decided baby needed to be delivered. Baby is now almost 11 months old and healthy as can be.

Get a private scan if you can or speak to your gp and ask to be seen at your epu. You often need to have a gp referral if there's no history of pregnancy loss.

Fingers crossed for you and your partner

Skyla01 · 23/04/2024 09:36

I had this at 11 weeks at unfortunately it wasn't good news. I phoned epu once the bleeding turned red and they booked me in for a scan the next day. If you can't get seen via NHS a private scan is another option. Best of luck.

Thegreatprocrastinator001 · 23/04/2024 21:07

Hi guys.. so I phoned the EPU this morning and they said my GP has to refer me. I told them I saw a GP yesterday who said to phone them if it continued. Turns out the GP should have referred me yesterday but it was a locum who didn't know the process! So now I have a scan booked for tomorrow. More brown spotting today on and off, not much, and no cramping, but I'm not holding out too much hope as I'm sure boobs are less sore too. I just want to know either way, though it sounds like even a scan showing things are ok might not be definitive! Crikey it's a roller coaster! Daniki I don't know why they didn't give you progesterone?? That's awful. I hope mine are more amenable if it's relevant. Thanks for all the support and words of wisdom.

And as an aside, the dog also ran into barbed wire Sunday and has had to be stitched up so we are both taking it easy this evening, though alas my partner is definitely being more attentive to the dog 😂🙄

@Thegreatprocrastinator001 I hope it's good news! I know, it seems to work backwards here in Ireland 🙄 poor doggy hope he's ok!!
Try and relax yourself and not worry, altho easier said than done!

Hey @Thegreatprocrastinator001 hope all goes ok with your scan tomorrow. Do try to get progesterone if you can.

i am also having some brown discharge but I’m only 4.5 weeks so very hard for me to get anything, can’t get progesterone without a scan and can’t get a scan til 6 weeks! So just hoping my body knows what to do and will hang onto the pregnancy 🤞

sending hugs ❤️

@Thegreatprocrastinator001 how did your scan go?

Ive finally managed to get progesterone through a private consultation but nhs has agreed to let me get it from them so I don’t have to pay. So pleased! I haven’t had any more brown since Tuesday, it’s now more yellow and white. I’m glad I’ve got the progesterone now as an extra measure, just need to go pick up the prescription tonight and get it from a pharmacy.

noimnotbutyoushouldseeyourfaces · 25/04/2024 16:15

Hi op,
I had this at roughly the same time as you, and now have a ds bouncing around.

I did go for a private scan for peace of mind c

Thegreatprocrastinator001 · 26/04/2024 17:39

Hi Guys.. well I went for a scan and they could see a sack and a vague form inside but said it was too early to see a heartbeat. However, I've been bleeding ever since even though I've had no cramps or clotted material, so I'm not holding out much hope. This is okay though because I'm 45 and was well aware of the risk of miscarriage, and I also have two lovely girls 15 and 17 already. So the travelling plans may be back on! I presume I will miscarry and am guessing the baby has already died but they've booked another scan for next week to see what's happening... Thank you all for your input! Ps apparently in my area they only give progesterone once they've seen a heartbeat x

This happened to me and sorry to say it didn't work out well. I did have a scan and all seemed well but the day after the scan things got worse
This was around 7-8 weeks

I tell you this only so you don't get too hung up on the scan 💐

Thank you... Yes I'm sure miscarriage will happen imminently and I'm surprised I haven't started passing tissue yet or had cramps. Sorry you went through it. I thought miscarriage would be quicker, at least the painful bit, but I'm just bleeding on and off! I wonder whether it will have happened properly by the scan though X hope you are ok

It took about a week from when the red blood started for everything to pass. I had a scan afterwards to make sure my womb was empty.
It wasn't too painful, don't worry. ❤️
