Baby measuring big

Baby has been measuring big at midwife appointments based on “manual” measurements. Being referred for a scan. Any experiences of what happens if baby is big on the scan?

They had me on weekly scans at the end. They were convinced DS was going to be a whopper. He was 8 lb 1 🙄

How far on are you? You'll probably be tested for gestational diabetes, or tested again if you've already been tested. That's where I'm up to, with another scan next week (at 36 weeks).

WildCherryBlossom · 19/04/2024 16:24

It's very inaccurate. One of my babies was measuring small - lots of extra scans due to development concerns. Baby was actually very large. Subsequent baby was measuring very large and was actually smaller than the previous one.

What will be will be

What do you mean by big? Do you have a percentile reading?

eloisie · 19/04/2024 20:09

Above 90th percentile mid-third trimester, no GD. Was just asking out of interest, appreciate there’s a lot of unknown!

My fundal length with my first was always measured to be either too big or too small. Baby couldn't make up his mind.

I was sent for 3 additional scans based on this, but the sonographer had a look each time and didn't have any concerns. Baby was born above average, but not a jaw-dropping weight.

Try not to worry until you have something to worry about. The midwife has determined there COULD be an issue and is doing her due diligence. Doesn't mean something is wrong.

If it helps at all, I gave birth to an 11lber with just gas and air. He was much "easier" than my 9lb9 baby. All my fitness that have had growth scans have been given estimates far larger than their baby ends up weighing. As in several pounds heavier than they actually are.

Yummymummy2020 · 19/04/2024 20:30

Similar to above. Twice I have been told I was having huge babies. One was 7lbs and the next 8lbs. I was induced because they were so worried and because I had gestational diabetes. My inductions were before my due date. Ironically they thought my third baby was going to be small and she was 9lbs. All three had regular growth scans too and scans in clinic seperately with my consultant 😂

WelshTattySlippers · 19/04/2024 20:33

They told me my first was was going to be a whopper. He was 5lb 12oz at birth.

Those manual measurements are very inaccurate. As soon as the baby moves into a different position, the belly will measure differently.
I have been sent for a scan saying my belly dropped, so the baby is too small...at the scan, they told me she will be over 90 percentile.
She was born 3290kg on the 25 percentile. She was very long, so I guess her leg bones measurements made it seem like she would be a very big baby.

Macadamiabeat · 19/04/2024 21:02

My bump measured too small this week. Was sent for a scan and told it was urgent. Scan showed the baby is too big and I had to see a senior midwife. She didn't seem too concerned, but I have to have the GTT again just to rule it out even though the results from my last one in February were 'very normal'.

I'm only 5ft tall!

fairymary87 · 19/04/2024 22:06

It's so rare they are actually that big, but when it's your first time experiencing it, you do worry

eloisie · 20/04/2024 20:51

Thanks all! Not overly worried, just wondering what it would mean if it happened, I guess an early delivery maybe. I’m feeling ok about this stage of pregnancy and grateful to be here whatever the next few weeks bring 🙂

Anything over 90% or below 10% you will tend be induced between 37-40weeks. They won’t normally based off one scan if your earlier on so I puke expect a review and another scan to check the results again (plotting trends)

RandomMess · 20/04/2024 21:01

My manual measurements were always small, even when 17 days overdue.

She was 10lb 6oz 🙄

Even scans aren't particularly accurate!
