Is this normal? Awful sleep in 2nd trimester

Hi all,

I just wanted to post on here because no one in my real life who has been through pregnancy seems to be able to relate and only replies with ‘god help you if you can’t even sleep now…’

im 22 weeks. For the last 6ish weeks I have had really bad sleep progressively getting worse. It’s a mixture of what I think is insomnia (going to bed feeling tired but my mind just never switches off) and nights where I am tired but my whole body aches within 15 minutes of being in any particular position.

i have a healthy BMI, I’ve never had sleep problems before or any type or physio or skeletal problems. I have a little bump but no one can even tell I am actually pregnant yet.

I don’t understand why I ache so badly. I have a few different pregnancy pillows, they don’t help. I’ve tried the two other beds in our house and my sleeps no better there.

if I’m on my back, my lower back ends up really aching, even with something supporting under my bum. If im on my side, my shoulders go dead, my hips hurt even though I usually sleep this way and I have a pillow behind me and between my knees.

I woke up this morning after having a combined sleep stretch of about 90 mins and just cried.

is this only me??

I was the same for a few weeks at that stage, I'm currently 30 weeks and it's improved SO much. I started taking my multivitamin religiously and getting outside a bit more in the morning. Could be a coincidence but worth a shot. Swimming also eases my aches and means seems to help me sleep better too.

Sorry about the unhelpful and unsympathetic sleep comments you've been getting, that's really unnecessary.

I have it sporadically. So some nights im
all good. Some I wake up between 3-3:30am and that’s it for the night. I’m awake

I’m ok if it’s just one, but a couple of weeks ago I had a few nights in a row and I was waking up crying too. I am hoping it passes as it’s really hard. You have my sympathy

My insomnia has been awful in this pregnancy. It improved around 13 weeks and came back around 19 weeks. It's a mixture of insomnia for no reason + discomfort some nights.

ive been experiencing this. I’ve found it’s been less bad on days I’ve been swimming or done a yoga class, you could try that.

Thanks for your replies everyone. After this post I had another rubbish nights sleep and then had a phenomenal night where I only woke up twice to change sides- think I must have just reached exhaustion.

I do pregnancy yoga but only once a week. I will try doing some YouTube videos at home on an evening and see if that helps at all. I’ll report back!
