Extreme shoulder right pain

Hi. I'm 35+4 and have been experiencing extreme pain in my right shoulder for a few hours (bringing me to tears). It feels like a sharp pain in the tissues/ muscle, rather than the bone. I haven't done any exercise or stretching to cause it.

It's worse when I laugh, cough or lie on my right side. Any experience of this?

Have you a headache or any other symptoms?
When I was pregnant, my hips and shoulders would be in agony coming towards the end due to the bump and size of me! And just not being able to get comfy.

In my experience it’s always been trapped wind. I know it sounds ridiculous but I used to get it so bad I’d be in tears, unable to take the pain of it. To try and relieve it in pregnancy, get some peppermint tea and lots of water. Give your midwife a call just in case it’s a symptom of something else though.

You need to phone the assessment unit. It could be nothing, but severe shoulder pain can be a red flag

No, no other symtpoms. Baby is moving OK, although low down and giving a bit of pubic bone pain.

I had a urine dip last week with protein, leukocytes and traces of blood (leukocytes are normal for me in pregnancy), but I feel well otherwise. They said they'd be in touch if the urine test is postive for infection, but nothing back so far.

@cosylife i did wonder that too. I've never had this pain before, its eye watering. Although I have heard shoulder pain is pretty bad with trapped wind.

Please call your out of hours unit and let them know your symptoms. The shoulder pain along with protein in your urine is a flag to me. They might leave you over night and bring you in first thing but don’t leave it. Call it tonight and get them to make the assessment

I literally pulled a muscle at the base of my right shoulder blade the other week by literally sneezing twice - the pain was so bad if it had been the left side I'd have got hubby to take me to hospital suspecting hear attack!
Try hot water bottle behind your back shoulder abs if it doesn't get any better see your GP xx

as per PP shoulder pain (especially right sided shoulder pain) is a red flag for pre eclampsia so I would get onto triage now!

I didn't know this when I posted my reply so definitely take that into consideration too @Summer210 xx

Yes agree with others you need to be assessed. It could be all or nothing but you need checking out.

I've checked my BP and its 118/81, so ok. But yeah, maybe i will call for advice.

Called for advice and they reckon either trapped wind or unrelated to pregnancy. They said present to A&E if it worsens or call the GP tomorrow. She reckoned there's no link with preeclampsia despite what it says online🤔

Every time I've seen my midwife she always starts with the same questions and 'have you had any shoulder pain' is one of them. It can be a sign of pre eclampsia.

Who did you call? I would imagine that triage would want to see you

I had this during my last pregnancy and it was actually my gallbladder. I ended up having it removed (not while pregnant). The pain was like nothing else I've ever experienced

Shoulder pain plus proteinuria warrants a proper check up. Whoever you spoke to might not have been aware of the protein in your urine. Please ring your midwife or the triage at your hospital (whatever the advice on your notes is).
