Cramping in early pregnancy

Hi all,

I had my BFP four days ago and am 4w +1. We had a chemical back in October with similar timings and I'm now so anxious that the same thing will happen again.

I've been testing daily and the line is getting darker but I'm having cramping this evening like my period is about to come. I really hope this isn't another chemical. Is this normal?

I’m 5 weeks today and have had cramping on and off, several times a day. Central and to one side.

I had cramping on and off throughout early pregnancy and everything was fine! My anxiety was awful. When I had the cramps I was constantly checking for a bleed (there never was one), and when the cramps stopped I'd panic that things weren't progressing.

The GP told me that as long as the cramps weren't one sided, excruciating or accompanied by blood I didn't need to consult medical advice.

@spannered this is reassuring, thank you!

How long did it last for when you had it?

Probably the first 8-9 weeks x

Cramping is completely normal as your uterus expands . It was the first sign I had that I was pregnant .

I actively cramped all the way between week 5 and 8, then from onwards I got all different sorts of pains in and around my abdomen, which is normal as due to internal expansion.

I'm 16 weeks now and have had period-like cramps on and off throughout. It's only a concern if very painful or you have bleeding.

Thanks everyone. It seems to have subsided for now but at least I know not to panic if it comes back. The main symptoms I had with my chemical were cramping and back pain so I immediately jumped to thinking the worst!

Hi all this is my first pregnancy I’m so anxious about everything I have been experiencing back pain and head aches I’m 8 weeks pregnant do I have to contact the hospital or I am just being paranoid

@Dannii13 my guess would be paranoia. At 8 weeks I had pains, headaches and lack of energy. Back is just one place, as time goes on you will discover you can have abdominal pains in new places never felt before.

@Xur thanks for the reply back it’s the anxiety waiting for my 13 weeks scan to see if everything is ok

@Dannii13 from what I've read headaches and back pain are pretty normal. Have you considered getting an early scan for reassurance?
