Hi lady's so my early pregnancy unit called me today and said I can have a scan Monday as suffered a MC before at 6/ 7 weeks I'll be 5 weeks 5 days then would this be an internal scan? My partner is a bit worried an internal scan may have some risks? And also what would I see at 5 weeks 5 days?

I'm also having tightness in my legs and pain under my heels

It will in all probability be an internal scan, these don't pose any risk to the baby. If you can I would wait a few weeks - you may see very little at this point which could make you feel more worried rather than reassured. It is very hard for them to measure accurately etc when they are so small. 7 weeks+ you should be able to more conclusively see a heartbeat and measurements are more accurate.

CluelessInLondon · 05/04/2024 12:22

Congratulations on your pregnancy and I'm sorry to hear about your previous loss. 5 weeks 5 days is very early, I'm quite surprised the EPU have offered something quite that early - did they check the date of your LMP before offering the scan? If I were you I would want to wait another week or so after that to be able to see a bit more - after 6 weeks you should be able to see the heartbeat.

It will be an internal scan as it would be almost impossible to see anything on an abdominal scan - internal scans aren't dangerous for you or baby but can be a little bit uncomfortable. I had two early internal scans in my current pregnancy because of a previous loss and had a little bit of brown spotting a few days after each one, which I put down to the cervix being irritated by the wand.

Thanks i was going to book a private scan 8 weeks, but when my epu contacted me today as they know I had a loss before they offered me scan for Monday I think they little bit worried about my leg and foot pain and been having belly and groin pain on and off, not sure if they will do another scan later on or if ill do that private

Yeah i told them last period date was 29th Feb and possible ovulation 12/14 march, I think they want to make sure the prancy is in right place due to my pains

@UnicornPrincessSarah That makes a bit more sense then - at 5w5d they should be able to see if the pregnancy is growing in the uterus, and see the gestational sac and yolk sac. It might be too early for a heartbeat though, so don't panic if you don't get to see that. They might want to bring you back 2-3 weeks later for a reassurance scan where you can see more (and if they don't offer it but you want one, definitely ask - the EGU at my hospital would have been happy to discharge me after a single scan at 7+2 but I asked for an additional one because of my previous miscarriage, which they were happy to do 2 weeks later).

Internal scan is safe. Be prepared you most likely won’t see a heartbeat that early on, and the dates might be a few days earlier or later. Hope all ok!

Edited

Thank you, hopefully they may offer one at a later date if no heart beat or have to do a private one

We were in the same position a few years ago. I had a lot of pain as with my earlier loss but we were able to see a clear heartbeat at 5 weeks. They said it was about the earliest you could possibly see it but I believe it can take up to 7 weeks.

Good luck - I very clearly remember how worrying it was.

ScoobyBooby · 05/04/2024 13:16

I’ve had a few early scans all internal , no issues at all , was always offered repeat scans and blood tests.

good luck

Sa11yCinnamon · 05/04/2024 14:53

I had a scan in EPU at 6+6 and it was abdominal which I was really surprised about, I was ready to strip off! But as PP have said internal is totally safe. Fingers crossed you get the reassurance you need, and they should offer a follow up if it's too early for the heartbeat x

Hi. I had a scan at 5 weeks to check it was growing in the right place. They re scanned me two weeks later and saw heart beat. They should offer you another scan
so hold off just yet if you’re booking private x

Yes it was with the NHS. I first went to EPU at 5 weeks as I was bleeding and some pains. Scanned me to locate the pregnancy, and blood tests to see HCG is rising. Saw it was on right place so booked me in for a scan between 6 to 7 weeks. Saw heartbeat, and was signed out from EPU to have my next scan at 12 weeks. ☺️

Wise0wl · 08/04/2024 14:06

@UnicornPrincessSarah thinking of you for your scan today, I hope everything is ok 🤞

Hi Ladies @CluelessInLondon @Marie27xx @Rosesanddaisies1 @Rosesanddaisies1 @SErunner @SErunner @Sa11yCinnamon @ScoobyBooby @Wise0wl @janeljl

Hope we all ok and had a good weekend

So i had my early ressurance scan today, The baby is in the right position and my date is correct 5 weeks 5 days today. We saw egg sac and gestation sac, and could also see that I ovulated from my left side wich confirms the pain I had 12/13 March when flo predicted my ovulation was wondering if I was feeling ovulation pain and seems I'm intuned with my body lol

Going back for my second scan 24th April where I will be 8 weeks to hopefully see fetal pole and heartbeat

Been having loose bowels today and quiet gassy, cramps in my belly, having to uranate a bit more, and sense a smell up a little to, and still have erect nipples and feel a bit tired but so far these are my only symptoms

CluelessInLondon · 08/04/2024 16:55

@UnicornPrincessSarah That all sounds really positive and great that everything is as it should be at this point. I hope the next scan goes well and you get to see your little bean wriggling around at 8 weeks!
