Cramping at 5 weeks

Hi everyone. I am coming up to 5 weeks pregnant. Since a couple of days after ovulation I have had lower back ache, and then over the last day I now have cramping too, like period pain. I had a missed miscarriage before I had my daughter, and a chemical pregnancy before this pregnancy. I don’t remember having this cramping last time and it is making me worry. I have no bleeding but I am also on progesterone. I know they say cramping and bleeding is a concern but my progesterone could just be masking the bleeding (I don’t know if it works like that!). Last night I also had this electric shock pain that came for a second, once or twice. It felt like to was in my vagina, like my cervix. This is also making me worry. I know progesterone can irritate your cervix so perhaps this is it. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this along with cramping on progesterone? Thank you!

Hi @frelu822 I was (and kind of still am) in the exact same position as you. At the end of January I became pregnant (after MMC & CP last year) I was prescribed progesterone to start from the positive (2x400mg of cyclogest) Similar to you I have been cramping pretty much every day from about 3DPO (with some backache too) I'm 12+4 now and came off the progesterone last week after 12 week scan as my consultant said there was no need anymore.

In relation to the progesterone masking an mc or bleed my midwife said it would actually be the opposite (that progesterone can irritate the cervix causing spotting / which luckily it didn't in my case) as the weeks went on I felt that my cramps were more from digestive issues (again caused by the excessive progesterone) but they felt (and to be honest still feel) like they could be uterine cramps which can be very unsettling with previous losses but I think it is just a "normal" pregnancy symptom now.

Obviously if the pain gets worse or you have any bleeding then you should contact your epau but I hope that my experience helps to reassure you a little that it might just be a normal pregnancy symptom heightened by the extra progesterone

I had loads of period style cramping between weeks 4 and 6, it’s normal and at my 8 week booking appointment the midwife said it would be on and off in the first trimester. I also had some aching and stabbing pains that felt like they were in my vagina/cervix. It is your uterus stretching. I’m 37 weeks now and no problems.
