Prophylactic Antibiotics in Pregnancy

I am looking for some reassurance and advice. I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and the last 4 weeks I have been suffering from recurrent UTIs.

I have taken 2 courses of Cefalexin and 1 course of Amoxicillin. I finished the second course of Cefalexin and my symptoms came back within a few days. I had an ultrasound on my kidneys today and they said I have hydronephrosis which means my kidneys are getting swollen due to pregnancy so they have recommended a low dose of Cefalexin until the end of my pregnancy.

I know it's best to listen to medical advice and I need to take there reassurance.

Has anyone had a lot of antibiotics in pregnancy and their LO been ok?

Sorry you're going through this @Ljordan13 I've not experienced this, but my sister in law had recurrent UTIs late in her third trimester and was continously on antibiotics for 5-6 weeks until the birth. Her DD born perfectly healthy and no problems so far at 3 months old! I'm only 9 weeks pregnant and currently on second course of antibiotics for tonsillitis... even when doctors ok things I can completely understand the worry about taking medication whilst pregnant!

@Hopingrae thank you for your reply it means a lot! I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had to have 2 courses too! I hope it clears up the tonsillitis as that’s very painful!

The more I’ve spoken to people the more I’ve become to realise that a lot of woman are prescribed antibiotics… better treated that the infection it seems!

I had exactly this when I was pregnant but it was 14 years ago. UTI, hydronephrosis found on scan, was on Cefalexin for ages. DS was fine xx
