I was an extremely anxious pregnant with my first and I’ve just found out I’m pregnant and can feel the anxiety already creeping in!
I ate this afternoon a smoked ham cheese and pickle sandwich from m and s, I’ve since read you shouldn’t eat shop bought sandwiches and especially to be careful with ham! Should I be worried?! In regards to sandwiches what is okay and what isn’t ? 😅😫

Is that NHS advice, or American? I don’t eat meat (so can’t be much help re ham!) but I don’t remember seeing anything about avoiding shop bought sandwiches or it being mentioned by any midwives and DD isn’t even 2 yet. What is supposed to be the issue with them?

I don't think I've ever read about shop bought sandwiches? I ate the same Gregg's baguette for about 40 days straight during pregnancy as it was the only thing I could stomach 😂

Mered12 · 24/03/2024 16:57

May have been American, it was an old post on here I seen as I was having a nose as I totally forgot what I could and couldn’t eat! Thank you all! 💕

Try not to stress yourself. I scared myself shitless after reading I shouldn't eat shop bought sandwiches. I suffered from terrible food aversions and exhaustion in first trimester, I literally lived off shop bought sandwiches and wraps

I eat ham rolls from home - for a while it was all I wanted! And I believe I ate that exact sandwich as I left my 12 week scan last week 🤣

I think with places like M&S you’ll be fine as their hygiene standards would be sky high.

PS - get their ready salted crisps too and pop a few in the sandwich next time….so good ☺️

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 24/03/2024 17:56

I've been in hospital with HG 6 times so far and everytime after the iv fluids and meds they've given me a prepacked ham sandwich to eat 🤣 so must be fine or I'm sure the hospital wouldn't give it me 😂

NightSkyWanderer · 24/03/2024 18:07

@BeautyAndTheBump1 well saying that , didn't two women in England die after being given sandwiches while in hospital? The sandwiches were contaminated with listeria. It was literally on channel 5 news two weeks ago
I'd happily eat shop sandwiches but would avoid hospital sandwiches. I'd heard before of listeria outbreaks in nhs hospital sandwiches after they were laboratory tested

Rosesanddaisies1 · 24/03/2024 19:14

Stick to NHS advice only. Even that is super cautious. Obviously there are healthier options to consider

That was in 2019 during a listeria outbreak. Unfortunate but not common in any way. Follow NHS rules OP. You'd be very unlucky to get listeria from most food available in UK that aren't on the high risk list.

bringmorewashing · 24/03/2024 22:31

You'll be fine OP as long as you follow the NHS list (which I personally think is a little over cautious, so you really can't go wrong)

Ham is completely fine. I'm another one who has been living off ham rolls for weeks, unable to face anything else. I make them at home (I eat so many it would cost a fortune to keep buying them!) But doubt shop bought would increase listeria risk much if at all.

Order a copy of Emily oster's 'expecting better' - she debunks all the patronizing advice given to pregnant women and sticks to the actual science. All other sources just assume our delicate girl brains can't cope with nuance,

Yea you can have coffee
Yes can have small amounts of wine
Yea you can have soft cheese
The person who wrote the nonsense about pre packed sandwiches was probably a man. They are fine. I ate loads of them,
