Pregnancy sickness support 2024

Hello,

I wanted to start a thread of solidarity for anyone struggling with pregnancy sickness - whether it's severe or mild. I am 6.5 weeks in my second pregnancy and already the sickness has been worse than last time. I'm not throwing up yet, but the nausea is debilitating and anything can set off the dry heaving. I'm getting headaches and extra saliva production and it just seems like a very long road right now!

This is an IVF pregnancy, so I'm struggling with feeling ungrateful for getting this far. And guilt about not giving my DD enough care and attention. My DH is being great though. Last time, my sickness eased at 16 weeks - not sure if this pregnancy will follow a similar pattern.

I'm on cyclizine which I think is taking the edge off, but nowhere near feeling ok. Would love to hear other's experiences and get real-time support x

I'm glad you mentioned the saliva production as I was thinking of making a thread about it last night - I feel like I am drowning! I'm at the point where I have a sick bowl that I use to spit in all day, it's absolutely disgusting lol. My poor husband must be so unattracted to me right now lmao. I've googled and can't really see anything that can help it either.

In terms of your medication I would ask for something stronger, try and get on top of it now! I'm on omeprazole alongside the anti-sickness as it's meant to help with the nausea so that might be a tip too!

I'm 13+2 today with HG. I did spend every week from 7 weeks in hospital until they put me on ondansetron at 11 weeks and its reduced the sickness down to about 6 times a day now so it's helping me stay out of hospital and I dont feel like i'm about to die anymore lol

muddlingthrou · 18/03/2024 09:55

Thanks for chiming in @BeautyAndTheBump1! It helps not to feel alone. The spit is out of control, and I know exactly what you mean about feeling like an unattractive gremlin! But we gotta do what we have to do to cope...

I appreciate the tip about the medication. I will get onto my GP. I don't speak to the same doctor everytime, and I notice a marked difference in attitude between various doctors - some are very dismissive and act like just because I'm keeping fluids down I should just grin and bear it.

Is this your first pregnancy? Just wondering if not, if your experience is similar to last time?

Can i just say i appreciate that theres a thread here that supports the pregnancy sickness!! I havent been sick yet... YET

but i always feel like im possibly one dry heave away from throwing up🫠

Today the dog shit on my arm unintentionally, he still had poo on his bum from the garden and i didnt realise and hes sat on my arm like wiping his bum on my arm... i was dry heaving for a good 5 minutes before my OH stopped laughing at me to get my dressing gown off😅

It could be over anything though i cant cope! Raw meats, wet dog food, dirt on my leather sofa from the dogs paws although i have throws on specially for the muddy paws! OH's farts after eating chilli sauce. I cant cope with every day smells🤢

Saliva isnt much of an issue but the dry heaving is definitely a problem! I dont know whether that could class as HG? Im not seeing a doctor just yet, just kind of getting on with it.

Iv been so bad sins 5 weeks now 14 week on sickness meds but still sick ever few days been to a consultant appointment this morning and she said 16 weeks hours start feeling better not holding out because I was told 12 weeks to start but it has got a bit better do have better days than others but still can’t do my normal day ruteen

FooFightingGal · 18/03/2024 13:28

Was looking to start a post about morning sickness, but found yours! Thanks!

I’m 6+3 weeks pregnant and the first time the nausea hit I thought I was dying (turned out it was wind) and would ease after a few minutes. Then I’d get nausea in the evenings and couldn’t do anything until it passed.

Since the weekend not been having much nausea, went to work (I’m a Self employed domestic cleaner) and on the drive home started to feel sick….still waiting for the voms to start and dreading it. I really hope it’s not while I’m working!!

3pancakesplz · 18/03/2024 15:58

I’m 9 weeks. I had hg with my first and have it again this time round, already been hospitalised and taking medication. I’m really struggling 😔

for some reason the last few days I’m raging hungry. I’m talking incredibly painful hunger pangs, they even happen half an hour after I’ve eaten. If I don’t eat something substantial then it makes the sickness even worse.

muddlingthrou · 18/03/2024 16:34

@LER2023 - just your descriptions have set me off retching so I can only imagine the reality 🤣 I admire your lighthearted attitude and am going to do my best to channel that kind of energy too!

@Kiwi23 - the 12 week thing is a cruel lie! My last pregnancy I struggled my way to 12 weeks with no medication (no idea why I was being such a martyr) and only when I got worse did I get help. My sickness did honestly ease at 16 weeks, so hope the same will be true for you (and me, or even earlier pleeeeease this time!)

@FooFightingGal - I think it's the unpredictability that gets me. I don't seem to be able to predict which days/times I will be totally unable to function, which makes holding down a job tough! I hope you escape the nausea for as long as possible x

@3pancakesplz - I am experiencing the exact same agonising hunger pangs at the moment! If I don't eat then the nausea and the hungers gets so much worse so fast. I have eaten terrifying amounts of bagels, hot cross buns and other carby snacks in the last few days.... I'm telling myself to do just do whatever it takes to survive the next few weeks and worry about my waistline later.

3pancakesplz · 18/03/2024 17:17

@muddlingthrou i feel you! It’s awful isn’t it. I agree, I’m hoping this stops after the first trimester and then I’ll worry about weight. Honestly with the amount I’m eating sometimes I look 4 months pregnant it’s madness. Even eating high protein foods doesn’t help. I just don’t understand how we can be hungry so soon after eating? I know it’s probably hormone related but still..

PeachDahlia · 19/03/2024 14:14

I’m struggling so much with sickness and nausea! I’m 7+3 weeks and had HG with my first pregnancy. I think my mind completely blocked out how bad it was last time and feel like it’s even worse this time, I wasn’t expecting to feel so sick til about 10 weeks which is when it started it my first pregnancy.

I have my two year old with me all day so it’s hard to rest. Already on a couple of anti sickness medications but still being sick unfortunately :( really hoping I won’t need to go to hospital for fluids etc this time.

My sickness stopped around 16/17 weeks so hoping it will this time although the thought of another 10 weeks feeling like this is making me miserable :(

is anyone else really struggling to eat literally anything?
yesterday I could manage plain bread and crackers and today even those are impossible!

muddlingthrou · 19/03/2024 14:36

I'm finding these an absolute lifesaver at the moment. They're really settling my stomach, so hoping they might do the same for someone else.

I had the humiliating experience of chucking up outside a primary school while walking the dog this morning. I'm not sure what set me off, but next thing you know I was spewing on the grass 🤦🏽‍♀️ I'm sure all the parents there thought I was a drunk...

@PeachDahlia - I'm sorry, that sounds so tough! I find tiredness really exacerbates the sickness and I also have a 2 yo so I imagine that isn't helping. Which meds are you on? Maybe time to go to the GP and see if they can try you on something else?

OP posts:
PeachDahlia · 19/03/2024 14:48

@muddlingthrou

thank you!
yes definitely struggling to rest with the 2 yo however he is going to his grandparents tomorrow so at least I can rest then.

cyclizine & prochlorperazine for sickness and omeprazole for acid reflux.

I was only given the prochlorperazine & omeprazole yesterday so it’s been the first day of trying them however still being sick, maybe it will take a few days for them to properly work? Who knows!

if not I will definitely ask for something else 😬

muddlingthrou · 23/03/2024 18:11

I've just started on prochloperazine today, and feeling some relief! Really hoping it keeps working as we're moving house next week and I have to be functional... hope everyone else is feeling ok x

I know this thread is a bit old, but I feeling your pain. I'm almost 8weeks and been feeling sick all day for the last two weeks. On Friday I started being sick. It's weird. I can eat and keep the food down. It's mainly just wrenching and saliva / acidic tasting liquid but it's awful. Taken a day off work today as could face the train commute, I'm almost scared to go out as it could happen at anytime!

belleissmart · 17/06/2024 11:45

@HB28 Have you spoken to the doctors? I have HG so am now on two different anti-nausea meds. The first stopped me from being sick, but the second stopped the nausea - which was actually almost as bad as I basically couldn't do anything except sit on the sofa. It was grim, so definitely worth investigating - it's so debilitating

belleissmart · 17/06/2024 11:47

@PeachDahlia sorry for pestering you MONTHS on - hope all is well now! How did you manage timings on cyclizine & prochlorperazine - I've been taking cyclizine at 5am, then prochlorperazine at 9am, and then just going eight hours forward and taking a dose of another etc but wondering if there's a better way!

muddlingthrou · 17/06/2024 11:47

@HB28 - totally happy for this thread to be revived! I'm 20 weeks now and no longer nauseous, thankfully

OP posts:
muddlingthrou · 17/06/2024 11:49

@HB28 - sorry, pressed post too soon. Sorry to hear you're feeling rubbish. Weeks 6-15 were probably some of the toughest of my life. I ended up on various meds but felt absolutely rotten throughout. It was a case of surviving, and now I'm appreciating everyday I don't feel horrendous. Hope you get some relief soon x

OP posts:
belleissmart · 17/06/2024 11:50

@muddlingthrou did you end up on anything besides cyclizine? So glad you're feeling better. I'm now on cyclizine and prochlorperazine and that seems to make me feel human - it is SO SO grim isn't it.

muddlingthrou · 17/06/2024 11:53

@belleissmart - I ended up taking both as soon as I opened my eyes, then another dose of proch at 2ish, cyclizine at 5ish, then a final dose of proch at 8pm. So proch 3x a day and cyclizine 2x. It helped but not nearly enough 😫

I did do a 5 day course of metocloploramide I think it was called that stopped the nausea but made me feel like I was wading through treacle...

OP posts:
belleissmart · 17/06/2024 11:57

@muddlingthrou think i'm basically on the same schedule as you then, except I'm on cyclizine 3x and proch 2x. It does help a lot - but I'm still horrendously sick every morning which just starts every day off terribly.

It's honestly the hardest thing I've ever endured - it's my first pregnancy and I can take no joy in it while I feel so sick, so looking forward for a day I feel better. SO glad you're doing better - that's the light in the tunnel for me!

Kiwi23 · 17/06/2024 12:04

I had really bad sickness for first 12-16 weeks and then it cleared up felt poorly for last week and then today thrown up anyone else had sickness come back this late..?

did it stay or was it on and off ?

My doctor prescribed me Cyclizine, took it three times on Saturday and was still sick but felt so knocked out (and it tasted disgusting)! I didn't take it again on Sunday. I know I should keep taking it and give it a chance, but I also suffer from anxiety and keep worrying it might harm the baby (even though I know lots of people take it and the doctor said it was okay). Anxiety isn't always rational is it!

belleissmart · 17/06/2024 12:54

@hb28 Yeah, it took me about three days on it to stop being so sick. Totally understand the anxiety, but you're right, it's SO safe - thousands of women have taken it for years. For me, I think I would have died without it, I was throwing up about 20 times an hour, it was grim. For me, the meds have helped so much - I'm not stuck on the sofa and just eating carbs, I can actually stay active and eat healthy so a massive plus for me. Maybe go back to the doctor's or ring your midwife to chat about the risks and see if they can help settle your mind? Good luck - hope you feel better soon!!
