Is it normal for pregnancy test line to get lighter?

Hello,

I am 7+5, had a scan at 6 weeks with a live embryo and Heartbeat which was amazing.

over the last few days I have noticed a drastic reduction in symptoms. I took a test this morning for the first time in two weeks and it is SO much lighter. I had a dye stealer two weeks ago and this one would be similar to my 14DPO test instead.

i have a private scan booked for Saturday so i am just accepting what it may be now. Had a previous loss in October already

tests aren’t designed to track progress of pregnancy , good luck with the scan this weekend

Thank you, I know you are right.

You don't need to keep taking tests. You took a test, had a scan, there is no reason whatsoever to be taking more tests. Please stop, for your own sanity.

Thank you, I will now. Only took one due to the changes in my symptoms but I will stop it’s too much anxiety!

@Hopefullytrying1 agree with above posters about not testing. BUT. I was in your position and tested and saw a fainter line and freaked out. I then read about the hook effect and retested with diluted urine and got my dye stealer again. I'm not suggesting you do this or take any more tests, just sharing that yes, my tests appeared to get lighter and all was OK. Almost 14 weeks now xx

Confusedddddddd · 13/03/2024 12:54

As previous poster said it's probably due to the Hook effect, I think it's around 5 weeks that hcg levels are so high that it can start.

The Hook effect doesn't take place until levels are above 500,000mlu. At ten weeks levels are around 100,000mlu.

Thank you for this. Do you mind me asking how far along when you had the fainter test?
Definitely won’t be testing again after how I feel now today!

Yeah I am hearing mixed info on this and that it is very rare too! So I’m just gonna roll with it now haha. Thank you very much

Yeah definitely hearing a range on this. Thank you so much for response!

My post from four years ago. Pregnancy test getting lighter at 7 weeks www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/3868770-Pregnancy-test-getting-lighter-at-7-weeks

Its impossible to say but yes they can get lighter as pregnancy progresses.
I've had lines get lighter ended in chemical and this time around my lines got lighter around 8 weeks and I'm currently 22 weeks.
Try diluting it in some water with a smaller amount of urine so it's not so concentrated. If it comes up darker it's likely to do with the high hcg tripping the test. My levels when this happened i would estimate around 100, 000 basing this on the 48-72 hour increase as had them tested 3 days prior and they were only around 48, 000 so it's definitely variable. I was so paranoid I was losing another pregnancy so booked a scan the following day

@Hopefullytrying1 for me it happened really early at just before 6 weeks. I'd read the hook effect shouldn't occur until much later but it was on my FRER tests that it definitely happened, not so much on the cheapies. As I said though, all that testing caused me so much stress and I really wish I hadn't continued testing xxxx

Thank you. Ya I hadn’t tested in 2 weeks as I knew it wasn’t going to do me any good if I did! It was just the ongoing worry after loss of symptoms that made me give in and do one and it only added to my stress rather than help it!
thank you again for sharing, it has really helped x

@Hopefullytrying1 no problem! Pregnancy after loss is so tough. Good luck for the scan on Saturday! X

lockdownbabyx · 13/03/2024 21:05

It really is impossible to say for sure...
However, 3 years ago the exact same happened to me, I was around 4 weeks and hadn't yet had a scan. I had 2 miscarriages before this so I was a serial tester! Early response tests were getting lighter and lighter over about 4 days and then I started bleeding. Went to EPU and it was a confirmed chemical pregnancy, kept testing until eventually they were negative. If I hadn't of taken a test to begin with I would have just assumed it was a late period.

I really hope this isn't the case for you, have everything crossed 🤞🏼
