12 week scan queries and worries!

Hi, I've just got my letter through for my 12 week combined screening and dating scan but it doesn't say on the letter anywhere about whether I'll need a full bladder or not. Do you normally need a full bladder for 12 week scan?

Also, I'm plus size (BMI 40) so I'm really worried that they aren't going to be able to see clearly during the scan due to me having quite a bit of weight around my stomach. Will this affect the scan? I'm so worried that I'll get there and then they wont be able to see much.

Thanks!

Hi Bobby

Yes, go with a full bladder. They will have toilets nearby if they need you to go and empty it. I had a BMI of 34 and there was no problem seeing it. It's still so low down at this stage, I found it was actually under my spare tyre!

My BMI is higher than yours and have had 2 12 week scans (and several early scans before that for various reasons) and my weight hasn't caused any issues. Very very worst case scenario they can do an internal scan if they are struggling but I've not experienced it post 10 weeks personally. Good luck with your pregnancy!
