Going for a promotion when pregnant

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently found out I’m pregnant, due in November. I’m also going through a recruitment process for a promotion (in my current company). Without being too outing it’s a major promotion and would involve managing a large team. I have a fairly good chance of getting it.

IF I get it, when should I tell my boss, when I accept the role, or when I hit the 12 week scan mark? I would plan on taking the full year off on maternity.

Any advice to make the work guilt / anxiety go away? The irony that I’m worrying about this on international women’s day!

Officially you don’t have to say anything until you’re 25 weeks. Most people say something before then but it isn’t required.

I was slightly different in that I found out I was pregnant shortly after accepting a promotion (literally Day 1 of new role was a Monday, found out I was pregnant that Friday). I told work straight away because I have been really ill and have actually already needed loads of time off.

Ultimately, do what you feel most comfortable with. If you’re feeling well and don’t need any adjustments to your role then maybe wait for a while, but if you’re going to need support then tell them sooner. I wouldn’t tell them before they offer you the job though - it would be crushing to not get it, suspect it’s because of the pregnancy but not be able to prove it.
