Link between Hyperemesis Gravidarum and ADHD

Has anybody heard this?
I was doing paperwork with a new client today who informed me that she suffered from HG and her midwife warned her that there's a link between this and ADHD.
My first thought was that she had misunderstood but I did a quick Google and several results came up.

Is this a "thing" do you think or are the articles scaremongery?

I had HG with both my dc, took all the anti emetic medications i could but still needed endless stays in hospital to rehydrate on IV drips.

Those dc are now 14 and 10, neither have ADHD or any other additional needs.

But I'm just one person, that has never looked into it, no research done, so can't say it does/doesn't happen. Just in my case, its a no.

tunainatin · 05/03/2024 20:16

Could you go on Google scholar and see if there are any research studies in peer reviewed journals?

Ttcmumma · 05/03/2024 20:16

Hmm I've never heard this but doesn't ring true for my family personally. Noone in my family has suffered with hg and a few of us have ADHD. My son is being referred for assessment now and i had barely any sickness. On the other hand my friend had hg and has the calmest little girl you'll ever meet 🤣

NugsNotDrugs · 05/03/2024 20:17

I had HG with all three of my pregnancies and none of my DC have ADHD.

Sconeswithnutella · 05/03/2024 20:17

I’ve never heard of this and I just did a Google search and came up with very little actual evidence. Coincidentally, or maybe not, I had HG with both of my children. One has ADHD and one has Autism.

fourelementary · 05/03/2024 20:19

My dd has two children. HG in one pregnancy and it’s her other child who has ADHD!

BaronessBomburst · 05/03/2024 20:20

Several pregnancies in my family (my own included) with HG.
None of our children have ADHD.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 05/03/2024 20:21

I had HG with both pregnancies, worse in the second one. My eldest child has ADHD, second child doesn't.

Dr Gabor Maté talks a lot about ADHD. He puts it down to adaptations we make as infants/children to our environment. He himself has ADHD, as does his son. Well worth seeking him out to hear it from the horse’s mouth - he’s written books, and you can find him on you tube and podcasts.

I wouldn't quote him as gospel TBH. His work is flawed. And reductionist.

Hi, I've been very interested in these autism/adhd links with HG, no doctors I've ever spoken to about it have had anything to add to what's reported on the news. However during my children's assessments with psychatrists they've always asked me did I have hg.

I've had 3 severe hg pregnancies, (all the way through sickness, some days puking in excess of 100 times a day/endless hospital stays) and those dc are fine, mildly on the spectrum, nothing major.
The one child I have with quite profound autism I didn't even have basic morning sickness with.
There is a link with HG and ND, but it's not a definite and as I say, my most severely nd child I had a decent pregnancy with.

All the others I've needed 3 antisickness, both IV and oral, the heartburn meds and steroids.

Interesting views, thanks! I will try Google scholar, good idea. I was only sort of idly Googling as she was talking earlier but I am quite interested.

Interesting - tell me more?

RoseNy · 05/03/2024 20:50

Do you mean women with ADHD are more likely to have HG or if you have HG your DC are more likely to have ADHD?

SgtJuneAckland · 05/03/2024 20:52

DM had HG with me and DB , I was a very chilled child, DB less so, but no signs of ADHD in either of us.

ditalini · 05/03/2024 20:53

There's a recent systematic review (study that looks for all published research on a topic and summarises it) that looks at this amongst other outcomes.

Their bottom line was basically maybe, but if there is an association,it's a small increase and the available studies are few, small and low quality.

More research, bigger studies of better quality are required. These could just as easily show no affect.

Women who have HG are more likely to have babies who with ADHD.
I have just looked at Google scholar and there are several small studies suggesting that HG leads to "poor Foetal outcomes" and may affect brain development.

If there is a link, do they have any idea why?

This isn't bad @Durdledore

Durdledore · 05/03/2024 21:58

@MrsTerryPratchett I couldn’t understand the article so I gave up 😂 Maybe I need to revisit it when I’m not tired.

It was about addiction rather than ADHD though…?

Moier · 05/03/2024 22:04

My daughter had HG.. her 3 kids have ADHD/ ASD and she's just been diagnosed with ADHD.. But l think it's a considence.. because it's genetic and you are born with it.. HG or no HG.

BobbleHatDay · 05/03/2024 22:10

Adding to your sample size - 2x HG, 2x no ADHD.

GruffalosGirl · 05/03/2024 22:12

I had no sickness at all with either of mine and they both have adhd. But then, so do I, so it's clearly all down to genetics in our family.
