This is about the only thing I avoided in pregnancy - I ate rare steaks, soft cheese, pate etc throughout 4 pregnancies but never any mr whippy type ice cream - when I was at uni a lot of people were really ill with listeria from ice cream that had come from a machine that hadn’t been cleaned properly so it really put me off having it when pregnant!!

HemlockSoup · 28/02/2024 15:56

Whatever people think about the food, McDonalds must be one of the cleanest places you can eat. I'm sure their ice=-cream machines are cleaned daily. Have your McFlurry.

Denimdenimdenim · 28/02/2024 15:57

It's fine.

Enjoy 🍦

I was told by a midwife at one of my early appointments that mc Donald's is where they recommend you go to if you are craving whipped ice cream as their hygiene is better than most places

ASGIRC · 28/02/2024 15:59

Chocolate sundaes have been a main food group for me, this pregnancy 😅

Lovemusic82 · 28/02/2024 15:59

I craved soft ice cream when I was pregnant so I ate it. Anyone can get listeria or food poisoning from many things, I’ve never actually heard of anyone getting it from ice cream (no one I know), I would be more wary of other foods such as raw fish, rice and take aways, these seem more likely to give you food poisoning.

Bali200 · 28/02/2024 16:10

I was specifically told by the midwife at my booking appointment to avoid McFlurrys, so I personally wouldn’t risk having it.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 28/02/2024 16:11

I’d only follow NHS advice; which doesn’t mention this. And as others say - McDonald’s likely have very high hygiene standards!

Thingsthatgo · 28/02/2024 16:15

hickorydickory20 · 28/02/2024 16:23

I am not one to usually comment about my small sample size proving something safe, but mcflurries being one of the foods I could eat during the first trimester nausea, my sample size is not as small as it should be. I have had many many mcflurries in the past 15 weeks. There is so much you could avoid during pregnancy, but the risk is so tiny. Enjoy yourself.

YouAndMeAndThem · 28/02/2024 16:24

McDonald's will use pasteurised ice cream so they're fine to eat. there's nothing on NHS website re not eating ice cream.

They absolutely do - they’re very hot indeed on food safety and general hygiene standards. Lots of regular cleaning schedules. I’d have no worries about it at all.

Cowboybuilderwoes · 28/02/2024 16:39

Yes you can eat it!! I checked as I love it, no eggs or unpasteurised milk in their ice cream (which is the risk so why they tell you to avoid it)

Bells3032 · 28/02/2024 17:01

i think i searched this when i was pregnant last time and said due to regular cleaning of machines Mcdonalds is safe. The issue with soft serve is often those machines can go weeks or months or longer without cleaning which means bacteria builds up

dementedpixie · 28/02/2024 17:13

I'm sure I've heard the ice cream machines go through a regular cleaning cycle and the ingredients are all pasteurised so McDonald's Mcflurries should be fine to eat. It doesn't warn against them on the nhs website either

No it's not the risk. The risk is the hygiene of the machine.

as others have said @NightSkyWanderer McDonalds is v. hot on this sort of stuff. they can't afford not to be as it would collapse their business if people were getting listeria from the soft ice cream as it woudl be so high profile.

snoopy18 · 28/02/2024 18:30

I was hooked on McFlurrys first pregnancy and had plenty this pregnancy - always a risk but do what feels fits your cravings 😂

Starspangledrodeopony · 28/02/2024 18:44

I ate literally anything during pregnancy, except pate, because of the vitamin A.

Sushi, blue steaks, all cheese, cured meats… I weighed up risk and it seemed mental to deny myself nice things.

sendismylife · 28/02/2024 18:47

I was told that McDonalds was the only place you could have soft serve ice cream from because their hygiene procedures were so much more reliable and rigorous than most places by my midwife.
