When were you offered a sweep?

I'll be 38+5 at my midwife appointment, and I won't have another until between 40 and 41 weeks. Unfortunately if I don't go into labour naturally before 41 weeks I'll be having a planned c section and the consultant won't risk an induction.

I was hoping my midwife would give me a sweep to see if we can get things going at my 38+5 appointment. Looks like most are offered at 40-41 weeks but I'd really like to see if they can kickstart labour so I don't have to have a c section. Not my first baby, not sure if that makes a difference.

Has anyone had a sweep offered at this stage?

I had my first sweep at 39+2 so not too much after you. First baby but they suspected he would be big, so wanted to induce at due date. I had two more at 39+4 and 39+6.

Thanks! I was wondering if there was anything that meant they couldn't offer one before 39 weeks. I suppose we'll see but I'm hoping so, especially as some people aren't receptive to them or need more than one.

My midwife said she would do one at 40 weeks if I hadn't had baby or we could discuss an induction. I will be 40+ 3 at my appointment. Baby no 4 for me x

They didn't do them in my area so I wasn't offered one.

soundsys · 28/02/2024 23:23

They don't do them until 40 weeks where I am

teatimeplease · 28/02/2024 23:24

They asked me at my 38 week app if I wanted one at my 40week app

Keha · 29/02/2024 00:08

I know they will do them at 39 weeks here and post 40 weeks you can ask to go in and have one if you are otherwise waiting for induction. I never agreed to having one till post 40 weeks, personal preference.

9am on my due date. I declined. I wanted to be left alone, and didn't appreciate her pressuring me.

I went into labour naturally at 40+4 🙂

Not offered until 41 weeks when I was pregnant with my eldest. All my others I didn't get that far but was always offered a sweep when they checked my cervix before induction.

Oh that's a shame then. My next midwife appointment I'll be almost 41 weeks rather than 40 and be super close to the planned section date so not sure if it would be worth it at that point.

My miswife offered me one next week at 38 weeks if necessary (might have to be induced and don't want to be..) but advised that 39 weeks would be better. Worth asking the question.

Thanks, gives me a tiny bit of hope. I actually didn't realise the 40 week midwife appointment is only for first time mums, the next for me will be 41 weeks but my c section date is before then so maybe she'll take pity on me and offer a sweep if this will end up being my last appointment!

1st and second baby they wouldn’t do it until 41 weeks. Third baby they offered a sweep at 38 week and 40 week appointments but I declined both, accepted one at 41 weeks.

It’s worth asking as they might try due to your circumstances.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 01/03/2024 19:29

Thanks everyone. Midwife said they won't do it until 39 weeks, but has kindly booked me an additional appointment next week so hopefully that goes well.
She did say they used to only offer them to overdue women but now that guidelines are to induce at 41 weeks rather than 42 they're offering sweeps from 39 weeks instead.
