Rhesus Negative - travelling abroad

Hi all
Im travelling to Budapest for a long weekend when I’ll hopefully be 13.5 weeks. I’d already mentioned it to the midwife and she’d said all fine just walk about on flight etc. I was getting good travel insurance and me being totally anxiety ridden even checked where the nearest hospital would be. Got a letter today telling me I’m rhesus negative and that I should call to get an injection etc if I bleed or have ab injury etc. My issue is I’ve had an unexplained bleed last week and I’m now totally panicking if I bled in Hungary would I be able to get the correct injection? Anyone travelled with the same bloody type/issue
Ive tried googling but can’t find much about availability in different countries

RH negative is managed the same worldwide in terms of giving Anti D for a bleed or potentially sensitising event. Do your hospital do the fetal RH screen? That way you'd know whether you definitely need Anti D or not!

Im not sure I will ask my midwife at my next appointment but from searching online it doesn’t look like it’s offered (I’m in Scotland)

@CJ3 I've just had the same thing happen. Light spotting during week 11 and due to travel to Montenegro on week 14. Also based in Scotland and can't find any information on fetal testing / testing for my partner to know if the baby is RhD positive. Did you have any luck?

I didn't find there was much about the dna screening online and was contacted about mine after my booking bloods. I am assuming you are currently below 12 weeks so that bleeding wouldn't be any harm. Anti-D is given in any modern country which Hungary is so you shouldn't have an issue. if you do then it actually has a 72 hour window o if it's a long weekend you can probably get back to the uk in time anyway. at that gestation it's probably gonna only be major bleeding that needs it not a bit of spotting but in the UK they'd probably give it anyway just to be on safe side.

I'm also RH negative - they don't test baby's blood until birth, through the cord. You'll have a big anti D injection at 28 weeks, as standard, and then if the baby is positive, you will have a follow up one while in the hospital after birth.

With any bleed, no matter how small (after the 16 week mark, I think, but this may be the 12 week mark), you need to raise with your midwife who will recommend you go for a smaller anti d dose at the hospital (they take bloods just before to take levels). You are given a 10 day deadline for the injection after any bleed.

The above is how my trust works anyway.

My trust does do fetal rh screening but its done at the 16w appointment, so i dont think it would help you if you are going at 13.5w. It took about 2 weeks for the results to come back to me.

Below 12 weeks they don’t give anti D anyway, but I’m sure you’ll be fine in a city. It’s very common.

I had an anti d injection after a fall at around 10 weeks. My hospital said there were no guidelines for below 12 weeks but that they would give it to me anyway as a precaution. I had spotting and bleeding off and on through the pregnancy, maybe that influenced the decision.

Do you know dad's blood type? In my case both me and husband are O- and so there's no chance of a + baby and therefore no need for anti-d. It might remove your fears (and the unnecessary injections!) if you know there's no chance of a + baby. Obviously I'd recommend checking with your maternity dept too so that you're sure, I'm not sure if it's only 2x O- that is true for.
