Rate of weight gain second trimester

Hi all,

I was in the overweight bmi category when I got pregnant and so medical advice is to keep weight gain under 25lbs in totality during pregnancy. I’m now 20 weeks. Up to 18 weeks, I had only gained 5lbs which seemed about right given most weight gain comes in later pregnancy.

Over past 2 weeks, I’ve put on 2lbs per week - so 4lbs in a fortnight, bringing me up to 9lbs total. This makes sense as my bump has noticeably expanded over this time. But I’m slightly worried about the rate of gain suddenly revving up - if I continue to put on 2lbs a week, I’ll be way over recommended gain. I know most gain comes after 20 weeks. Do people get spurts over a number of weeks and then it evens out?

I’ve got a decent enough appetite but wouldn’t say I’m “eating for two” or anything like that.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I lost half a stone in my first trimester due to HG. I’m 27+6 and back to what I weighed pre pregnancy. I’m getting weighed at the midwife appointment again next week so will see where I’m at then.

My fundal height was slightly below 50th percentile when I was measured at 24 weeks but I’ve had a private scan since then and baby is measuring on the 50th percentile so all very average despite my apart lack of weight gain.

My bmi at booking in was 30.

It'll slow down again, don't worry. I lose weight in the first trimester, reach my pre pregnancy weight around 14 weeks and then suddenly things take off for a few weeks before calming down again.

Thanks, ladies - I’ll try and relax a little about it. I got pregnant fairly unexpectedly, in a fantastic turn of events after 3 failed IVF rounds and 5 years of trying. I had gradually lost a stone beforehand (which I had previously put on with all the stress).

I have just been conscious about putting on too much weight given I was overweight to start with and wanting to be as healthy as I can be when the baby comes, as I’ll be 40 when giving birth.
