Has anyone been prescribed Omeprazole in pregnancy for heart burn / indigestion?

I’ve been prescribed it as my heart burn has made me vomit blood….

Just wanted to see how common it is to take this in pregnancy?

Yes, I've been taking it since about 16 weeks as my acid reflux was horrendous and waking me up at night. Now 31 weeks and baby seems to be healthy and well. I would have struggled badly without it

toomanyleggings · 19/02/2024 09:16

I got prescribed it early on but was scared to take anything. Gave in about 30 weeks when I was waking up every night choking on bile. Ugh. It made a huge difference. Probably should have taken it before

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/02/2024 09:16

Yes, it’s fine and such a life saver. Please take it as you’ve been prescribed it. Pregnancy is hard enough work, don’t suffer where you don’t have to. I had it last year when I had my son.

Yes! I took it throughout my whole pregnancy, no way in the world would I have survived without it. My heartburn was absolutely horrendous. It's safe to take during pregnancy! I know friends that took omeprazole whilst pregnant. It's commonly prescribed for pregnancy. If you're worrying about taking it or if it may harm baby etc, it won't, don't worry! Take it, it's a life saver!

Yes! Will be 33 weeks on Wednesday and have taken it since 10 weeks. I had horrendous indigestion and heartburn, I still get it now but not as severe. I take 20mg at night.

MissAutumnxx · 19/02/2024 12:19

Omeprazole is my absolute life savour during pregnancy! I could kiss the man who invented it

Sa11yCinnamon · 19/02/2024 13:06

Yes, it genuinely saved my life and I'm considering asking my GP about doubling my dose - she mentioned it when prescribing it, but I just want to double check before doing it.

XenaTheWarriorPrincess · 19/02/2024 18:58

Yep, been taking 20mg daily since 24 weeks. Now 30 weeks. My heartburn was excruciating. Was waking up every half hour or so in terrible pain, having to drink milk to get a few minutes relief to get back to sleep. Also woke up choking on my own acid a few times and couldn't lie down.

It's been a lifesaver, totally eradicated it until recently (just a touch of heartburn now and then, nothing crazy).

It's safe during pregnancy and it's really common as heartburn is so common. I've been raving about it to every pregnant woman who will listen 😅

It's good stuff. 10/10 would recommend

I took it throughout my second pregnancy as heartburn/ indigestion was adding to my terrible sickness. It got my sickness/ nausea under control where the anti-nausea drugs failed!

Nonumbersplease · 19/02/2024 19:12

I'm 15 weeks and had terrible heartburn from 6 weeks on the dot, I've been taking it.

cheddarsandtoast · 19/02/2024 19:28

Bloody amazing stuff and very common to take in pregnancy.

Notcheekyvimto · 19/02/2024 19:39

I’ve been taking it since 20 weeks and it’s changed my life, I couldn’t sleep before and was constantly uncomfortable, I’ve had no heartburn since my first tablet.

SnackyOnassis · 19/02/2024 19:42

Yep, took it throughout my pregnancy and it made the world of difference.
Currently sitting under a perfectly healthy seven month old as he drifts off to sleep!!

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/02/2024 19:47

I wish they’d mention stuff like heartburn and that you can be prescribed things to help at the booking appointment. With my first it got so bad I couldn’t drink water without pain and it was stopping me from sleeping before DH made me mention it to my consultant.

There’s such a narrative about how pregnancy is inevitably painful and difficult I think a lot of women suffer in silence with symptoms that could easily be tackled with no risk medications. Second time I asked for a prescription the day after my first burn.

cheddarsandtoast · 19/02/2024 19:53

Couldn’t agree more with @AnneLovesGilbert I suffered horrendously all through my first pregnancy and only sought help in my second as I was literally waking up thinking I was having a heart attack it was that bad. Started taking omeprazole and it has taken it completely away.

Sleepyquest · 19/02/2024 20:00

I had it but it did leave a funny taste in my mouth
