Im 22 weeks pregnant and freaking out as I dont know if I have a coldsore staring or its a spot
it feels like its on the boarder of my lips on the cupids bow there's no sore but its like feeling like an under the skin spot
its feeling kinda hot as well as I ran my teeth over it its very painful when I do that thats how I noticed it tonight and saw its gone red now over my lip ( may be from irritating it )

I dont know if ive ever had a cold sore if I have it was when I was like 11,

its not showing typical cold sore symptoms like liquid coming out or a scab yet but ill keep an eye
is it dangerous to have when pregnant if it is a cold sore?

if you possibly believe it could be your 1st one I might seek medical advice especially if you are planning to use antiviral creams.
I get them infrequently and got several at 20 weeks pregnant, I'm now 31 weeks. Generally it's not a problem.

Ttcmumma · 14/02/2024 19:51

No, there's no reason to worry about a cold sore in pregnancy. Just don't kiss babies face when they're born when you have a cold sore so you don't pass it on to them

I suffer with coldsores on a regular basis but since I’ve been pregnant they have upped their game.
I suffered 6 bad coldsores within 3 months, touch wood I haven’t had any now in about 6 weeks.
I went to the GP who advised this is common in pregnancy as your immune system is low, there is no harm to the baby in pregnancy but don’t kiss the baby while you have them once it’s born. I’m going to go back and ask for meds to treat them once the baby is born.
For now I’m using Zovirax but they also advised liquorice lip balm, apparently this can also help.

I have genital herpes. You can't transfer to another part or your body so wouldn't worry. I also had 3/4 flare ups when I was pregnant. Baby is absolutely fine.

Wait and see what it turns into and if you think it's a cold sore then Google and see some pics. Hsv usually presents as a cluster or small blisters but not always. It's probably a spot especially if you're not prone to cold sores. Try and chill a bit. If it's a sore or spot it's not the end of the world you'll probably just feel a bit achey and run down. Take it easy

If it was a cold sore I would imagine it would be more tingly/nerve pain, the pain you're feeling to me sounds like those annoying super sore spots you get near the lip or on the nose. I would think within a few days you'll know, it will either pop out as one Whitehead that may be a bit sore or if it's a cluster of blisters then you'll know. I don't think you need to contact anyone until you know for sure.
Is there any feasible way you could have gotten a cold sore if you don't think you've had one before though? If not and it is a cold sore, and you think you have definitely had one before then your baby will be perfectly safe in the womb and you just have to not kiss them when you have one.

Sounds like a spot

Flopsy145 · 14/02/2024 21:23

I have genital herpes that randomly has an outbreak location occasionally on my knee, very bizarre, but I know the pre tingle pain and it's very different to the sort of pressure pain you get from an emerging nasty spot at the edge of your lip. I would think it's likely not a cold sore especially if you haven't kissed or shared a drink anyone with an outbreak/recovering from one. Definitely just try stop touching it and probably by Friday it will be a little sore whitehead

SH998 · 14/02/2024 21:23

My coldsores differ each time, some are just a lump under the skin, not painful and disappear within a week or so (normally this is when I manage to catch them in time and cream up) others are horrific, some scab, others bleed, others just look like a bruise, also mine vary in size and colour.
I can often tell I’m due one as my glands swell everytime. I’ve suffered since a teenager so it’s the norm for me now 😂
The GP wouldn’t prescribe anything while pregnant, hopefully as you say it’s just a spot.
As for worrying, I think that’s the norm for many expectant mums, mine was an IVF pregnancy so the worry started way before I got pregnant and now at 34 weeks the worry hasn’t eased.
Stress can also cause coldsores so do your best to stay calm over the next few weeks (easier said than done I know).

Flopsy145 · 14/02/2024 21:33

@SH998 that's weird they wouldn't prescribe you acyclovir, maybe that's only for those with it genitally to prevent ab outbreak during labour but I had it from 36 weeks daily and baby was totally fine.

SH998 · 14/02/2024 22:09

I was on meds for them a few years back so assumed they would give it again but they flatly refused knowing I was pregnant and told me to go back once the baby was born. As you say maybe it would be prescribed if it was genitally, that would make sense I suppose to prevent any exposure to the baby during birth.
I have googled it and can’t find any effects to the baby during pregnancy but maybe they were being overly cautious.

Same for me. Think they give me a six week course.
