Should I worry about baby's measurements

Hi everyone,

I’m currently 28 weeks pregnant and could love to have some advice about my baby’s growth measurements.

At my 12-week scan, I noticed the baby’s BPD was quite small and fell outside the normal range. When I mentioned this to the sonographer, she said that it’s normal for some babies to have bigger heads and others smaller ones. However, at my 19-week scan, they only checked the HC, which appeared to be fine, although it was still at the smaller end while other measurements were all above 50th percentile. Looking for some extra reassurance, I opted for a private scan at 24 weeks and found out the HC is at the 2.8 percentile.

Went to my 28-week appointment yesterday, it seems that while other measurements are around the 50th percentile, the HC still remains quite small. Given that my eldest was recently diagnosed with ASD, I’m a bit anxious about this baby’s neurodevelopmental aspects, especially considering the smaller head measurements.

Do you think it’s worth going private and discussing these concerns with a feral medicine doctor? The sonographer/doctor I've talked on my 12-week and 28-week appointments seemed not worry about it..

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and help!

I think it's reassuring that the doctors aren't worried, and remember that there is known measurement error in scans. However given that it's been consistently low (relative to the rest of baby) I personally would seek some extra reassurance too. I don't know if it's the same for measurements in utero but once baby is born I think it's below the 3rd percentile where they'd investigate microcephaly. Really hope everything's okay.
