No yolk sac or fetal pole 6weeks+3

I had a scan today and there was a gestational sac with no yolk sac or fetal pole. I was given a leaflet about pregnancy with uncertain viability and asked to go back next week for another scan to check whether anything has changed.

Please give me some hope. I think it's pretty hopeless...

I definitely haven't got dates wrong as I was tracking ovulation.

This is still VERY early in the pregnancy. Totally normal.

Popsicales · 06/02/2024 17:02

I can’t give you any hope but I am in a similar position. I had a scan on Sunday at 6 weeks and they could see a yoke sac and a gestational sac but no embryo. They dated me at 5+4 but I’m sure about ovulation too.

Rosiiee · 06/02/2024 17:04

Handhold OP! That’s what happened during my last pregnancy. I had to wait 10 days to go back in for a ‘viability’ scan. When I went back there was a heartbeat! Development happens so quickly in early pregnancy! Not all is lost just yet.

Thank you for your replies. I feel totally devastated and alone. I have struggled to get through the day. I've lost count of how many times I've cried, I feel like my whole world is caving in.

Have you got another scan at some point? She didn't even date me, just said it looked more like 4 weeks than 6.

Just to add that it was an internal scan, not one on the tummy.

I can empathise as I went at 8 weeks past LMP (7 weeks if ovulation tracking was accurate as it was late) and measured 5 weeks 4 days with no fetal pole seen either. I can't give you an outcome yet as still waiting on the follow up scan, but the sonographer didn't seem worried.

You went even earlier, 6 weeks past LMP. That is VERY early for a scan.

Thank you for replying. When is your scan? Did they see a yolk sac then? They didn't even see that in my scan.

Next scan is Sunday. Yes, they saw a gestational sac and yolk sac, dated 5 weeks 4 days.

Still don't know what to think as that's over a week out from our calculations, but they did see everything looked healthy and normal for what they measured me at. I've had no bleeding or cramping either. Just have to hope and pray it is just a little bit behind but is otherwise continuing as planned.

Yes fingers crossed. Its so difficult waiting isn't it. Do let me know how it goes.

I'm really struggling with the waiting. I feel like I'm waiting to go to the gallows. I keep wondering whether coming off the pill has affected it as this was the first month after coming off the pill. Maybe I should have waited a month.

Daughter recently had a scan, couldn’t see anything on the tummy scan so had to have an internal scan, and then they picked up the embryo, tiny little dot, said she’s probably around 4/5 weeks
hopefully you’ll get better results next week xx

This was an internal scan I had where they couldn't see a yolk sac or fetal pole.

I had a scan at 5+3 and there was a sac but it wasn't very easy to see at all, I had a follow up scan at 7+1 and it was a lot clearer and a nice little heartbeat. Fingers crossed for you OP.

And just to add re tracking ovulation - I knew exactly what day I ovulated but when I had my dating scan at 12 weeks they said I was a week further along. 😮

SnookyPook · 07/02/2024 13:04

@UrsulaSings123 sorry you're in this anxious position. As others have said, so much can change so quickly in these early weeks.

I went for an early scan with my EPAU due to previous losses. By my calculations I should have been 7+2. Baby was measuring 6+2 which worried me a bit especially given my history, however they did see a heartbeat. Little one has stayed on that growth trajectory, a week behind my calculations and we're now up to 13wks (healthy 12wk scan last Friday).

If I had gone for a scan at what I thought was 6wks, I'd have only been 5 and likely not seen much. Sending you a hug and all the best for your follow up scan xx

How did your scan go today? I hope it went OK.

I had a second scan and they dated me 5+4 and there was a yolk sac inside, but they still said it was unknown viability as there was still no fetal pole, and I should have been 7+3 (7+1 at a push if you go by ovulation). They said to come back this week to see what happens.

I have felt manageable all week and then today I woke up and I feel horrendous again. I feel like what little symptoms I did have this week have totally disappeared and I think that my hormones have dropped and its causing me to feel low. I am so worried about the scan tomorrow 😪

Update: I was having a suspected partial molar pregnancy. I talked to the EPU and let them know about everything that was going on, they scanned me and they could see a weak irregular heartbeat but a vascular structure in my womb lining. I returned a week later to confirm the heart beat had stopped and then I had a D&C the next day. Just waiting for the tissue sampling to come back. My HCG was also elevated too. I got home from hospital last night and on antibiotics for infection.

@UrsulaSings123 how are you getting on?

It ended in a miscarriage. I am booked in for surgical management next Wed. Sorry to hear about the outcome of your pregnancy, its so sad isn't it.
