Any tips for combatting retching after brushing teeth?

Sorry to be so indelicate in the title 🤢

I am 7w0d today and for the past few days I’ve been retching after brushing my teeth in the morning. But this morning was the worst, it went on a while and it felt awful.

Is there anything I can do to help it?

As an aside, I am not feeling nausea at any other time of the day. I have a healthy appetite and haven’t gone off any food. Is the retching enough to be counted as morning sickness? Do I have it yet to come, or, should it be here by now?

God it’s horrible isn’t it. I switched from my electric tooth brush to a manual one which was definitely better. And it went around 16 weeks. Till then I just did my best.

It really is the worst! Thank you for the tip I will try a manual one.

My dentist told me to get the smallest head possible.. type of toothbrush.

I switched to a kiddies toothbrush. Mint toothpaste also made me gip so I ended up using strawberry flavoured toothpaste in the end.

I keep my window wide open and start with the areas that make me retch the most, to get those out of the way (for me the side next to tongue).

Buy a baby toothbrush

I hate to tell you but I still do this after having very bad 'morning' sickness 22 years ago! The toothbrush gagging just never stopped.

NewYearNewNameOldMe · 05/02/2024 12:45

I had this during chemo. Switched to a children's toothbrush with a smaller head, changed toothpaste brand and still retched sometimes but it did definitely help.

I kind of hang over the sink and let the toothpaste foam dribble out, because too much foam definitely triggers the retching, and sometimes so does spitting. Kinda gross but needs must!

Same as a PP, start with the areas that made me retch (molars and general back of mouth), then hoped and prayed that while brushing the rest I didn't accidentally trigger retching. It did stop after a few weeks, but it was exhausting at the time.

Omg I had this really bad. I wasn't suffering with bad morning sickness, just brushing my teeth made me retch without fail. Sometimes I'd follow it up with vom.

I stopped cleaning further back on my tongue (like at the back) and spent longer with the mouthwash.

It did pass though OP.

My dentist told me to play music at the same time and concentrate on that. Worked a treat for me.

Weftaway768 · 05/02/2024 13:39

Breathe! And breathe again!

NoodieRoodie · 05/02/2024 13:39

No tips but my dentist just said to do my best, if that meant just using water to brush then that was fine, same with not being as thorough as usual. It was horrific all through my second pregnancy but third time round it passed after the first few months.

Longtobe2023 · 06/02/2024 16:23

I can’t lie I laughed far too much at this! I sometimes wretch that much I’m sick (11+2) I’ve not been overly sick but my god I bawk at everything! I end up doing the tippy tap dance saying “don’t think about it” about 20 times a day 🤣 the things us ladies have to go through ay! If you find a cure please send it my way lol x

DoloresDoors · 06/02/2024 16:29

Mine stopped about 6 months after giving birth. Do your best at brushing but try mouthwash if you can't do as good a job as you normally would.

mathanxiety · 06/02/2024 16:38

Kid toothbrush, a little sloshing of mouthwash afterwards.

It's a horrible thing.
